Marshall collecting signatures for potential U.S. Senate run
By JR Hoeft | Saturday, January 7th, 2012 | PoliticsDel. Bob Marshall, who only by the narrowest of margins was not the Republican Party’s U.S. Senate nominee in 2008, is apparently ready to give it another go.
The Prince William County delegate has been quietly collecting signatures to get himself on the ballot for the June primary.
According to sources, Marshall is at least collecting in Shenandoah and Lynchburg.
He has made no official announcement that he is running, but one can only surmise that he saw no suitable alternative to former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen in the current candidate pool and has decided to test the waters with this petition drive.
Candidates for U.S. Senate could begin collecting signatures at the beginning of the year and must have all petitions turned in by March 12. As in the presidential primary, at least 10,000 signatures state wide and 400 per congressional district are required. The State Board of Elections recommends 15,000 state wide and 700 per district.
Update: Josh Huffman also recently posted that he received a box of these petitions in the mail, but never indicated he was going to circulate them, as others apparently are.

….thus putting the final nails in the political coffins of Radtke, McCormick, and Jackson, at least for this election.
Where do I sign? !!!!
Del. Marshall’s hometown Prince William County Tea Party Patriots were collecting signatures for him today. I was a the guest speaker at their citizen lobbyist training today and they had their clipboards out.
I can’t imagine the plan for a path to victory here. Just now kicking off a campaign as the General Assembly session is about to begin? Bob has never been strong in fundraising…how will he compete in a *primary*, which is far more difficult for the “not-Allens” than a convention?
I wonder if Bob has allied with the Allen campaign work to clear the field?
Trainwreck, period.
The difference in his candidacy, VA Patriot, is that he actually does things rather than talking about what he might do.
Example, I understand that he plans to introduce a Tenth Amendment Bill in this session which states that Vriginia will not cooperate with the detention of US citizens whose constitutional rights are being denied by the federal government (anti-NDAA measure).
What carries more weight, when the primary comes around? Showing that you put words into deeds, or just talking about it?
Interesting last line of the article.
In response to your statement, yes, I am in the process of circulating petitions for Del. Marshall and am also planning to do so for Jamie Radtke once I have them. If you are wondering, I’ve been told to make my articles on examiner.com not about me and my activities, but rather objective news stories. If you want my opinions and goings on, you can find such news on my blog. (Although admittedly I haven’t discussed this particular topic yet.)
FYI, in the past 24 hours here in Harrisonburg, I have seen petitions for both Allen and Marshall as well as Goodlatte and Kwiatkowski. I expect Radtke petitions to be available very soon. I’m glad to see most of the candidates have learned something from the mistakes of Gingrich/Perry.
@Sara: A primary is an entirely different beast than a convention. Bob will have to organize statewide. I’m saying that I don’t see how this happens in the time remaining, especially with the GA. Just getting petition signatures will be a daunting task for any candidate that doesn’t already have a ground game. This is where I expect that Jackson and McCormick will falter.
VA Patriot, I suppose we shall see, huh?
From what Josh says above, Radtke’s campaign hasn’t even gotten him petitions yet….so, who has the better ground game at this point?
Radtke is a non-factor. The nomination is Allen’s to lose, but Marshall at least has a base of support to challenge him. None of the other purported challengers do. BTW, Bob Marshall as our nominee = Senator Tim Kaine. Marshall has zero chance of defeating Kaine.
Sara, the best ground game is Tim Kaine.
Turbo, you’ve been calling Allen names here and pointing out his supposed flaws for months now. And suddenly now you worry about potential damage to Allen?
Seriously.

acturally Sara I see this run as not being directed at Allen but getting back at Radtke. Call it like it looks.. Sad though because I like Marshal and can think of no other candidate I would rather see team up with Cooch to take the governors office and LT gov..
What a wasted effort. This plays well for Tim Kaine though since Bob will dilute votes but he will help tear a new hole into Allen though..
Not sure I’d see it that way — Allen and Marshall have worked together on a lot of legislation, even to the point of Allen endorsing personhood, which Marshall is carrying in the General Assembly this year.
I think you’re going to see an honest assessment of what both candidates can bring to the table, and to the winner goes the support. Clearly, the campaigns that have run straight at Allen have collapsed under their own vitriol — not sure Marshall will be eager or willing to replicate that mistake. Too smart a campaigner for that (and that’s not how he ran in ’08).
I just never expected Tim Donner to go right after Bob and attack him like he did. It was weird.
Shaun, I have been asked if anyone thinks Bob might run then suspend later and throw support behind Allen? Personally I doubt he would but the question is floating around on a patriot blog.
I have no inside information, but I believe Marshall is running in earnest. None of the other challengers to Allen have gotten the slightest bit of traction, and he has been on track to win the nomination in a walk. So, there is no need to engage in any political trickery. Plus, one thing that can be said with certainty about Bob Marshall is that he fights for his principles. I just cannot see him participating in a scheme to act as a spoiler for another candidate. He plays to win.
Ken, I am a big fan of Bob Marshall and cannot imagine him doing anything nefarious.
Job #1 has to be that Kaine does not win for Obama and I will take any candidate who can beat him. I just do not see Allen doing that no matter how well he dominates the gop masses. Allen nis not an insurgent for the DNC but Radtke and Marshall are. Taking Marshalls strengths into full consideration, which office does his past experience suggest would he attract the most support?
Said it before, I would be very excited to see him become our next Lt Gov.
I was with Bob Marshall last time, and am with him again if he’s in.
I’ve said all along, Marshall is the one candidate who can unify the Anyone But Allen vote.

Henry, if there is truth to the rumor that Bob will not hold Allens record up for review to put it lightly, then it will be interesting to learn what he has in store. Maybe we find out friday when he announces?
