Virginian-Pilot: Endorses Democrats, circulation drops
By | Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 | Politics

As the Virginian-Pilot laughably and predictably tells people they need higher taxes and Democrats, more people tell the Pilot they don’t need the newspaper.

Daily circulation is down over 5%, and Sundays are down 9%.

The Pilot’s analysis is that they are doing everything right and the bleeding is fine, because other newspapers are losing readers much more quickly.

Ah, more brilliant analysis from a newspaper. “Gee, Captain. Our ship isn’t sinking as fast as those others. I feel so safe!.”

About the author

Brian Kirwin

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Brian Kirwin is a political consultant and public relations strategist in Virginia Beach with a lightning-rod flair. Brian also serves on the VB Arts & Humanities Commission and frequently appears on Hampton Roads theatrical stages, if only to prove that all actors aren’t liberals. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

Keeping the bleeding to a minimum is the fact that they won’t let you un-subscribe, either. Last year my renewal date came and went (I had decided not to renew) and 5 months passed before they offered me a 1-year renewal at much less than half-price. This year it has already been about 3 months since my renewal date, and I haven’t heard boo from them except for a single bill in my mail. And yet, the paper keeps showing up on my porch every morning.

Keeping my name on their subscription rolls is much more valuable to them, in terms of advertising dollars in addition to supposedly slowing the subscription decline, than the $40 or $50 (list price $129.95) that they’ll charge me for a year of delivery.

    Brad,

    You must be lucky!

Anytime my debit card number changes (every 6 months because the card wears out), my paper gets cut off. The folks at the Pilot don’t send you a text message like almost everybody else. Despite the fact that they want to debit your bank account for subscription, they do not want your email address to tell you they can’t renew your subscription.

Pilot endorsed in 6 more races today. 6 more Democrats.

I can’t wait to laugh at the Pilot Editor on TV after the election.
