My thoughts on Delegates who get jobs from offices they fund
By | Friday, August 21st, 2009 | Politics

She shouldn’t do it.

“McCabe said he had not advertised the position but had talked in the past with Miller about the post, which has been open for at least a year.”

“How do you not pick up somebody like Paula Miller?” McCabe asked.

Sheriff’s offices get how much of their funding from the State? So here’s a nice job for a Delegate that isn’t advertised for anyone.

It’s the middle of a recession, folks. Unemployment is high. Do you mean to tell me that no one can talk to the press as well as Paula Miller can, to the point where you don’t even need to interview ANYONE else?

She’s carried legislation that benefits Sheriffs (HB 2574 this year alone).
She serves on the Militia, Police and Public Safety committee.

Now she gets a cush job offer on the hush hush.

“And her daughter is now old enough to drive herself to Catholic High School in Virginia Beach, Miller said.”

Don’t even get me started on Democrat “strong supporters of Education” who don’t send their children to public schools.

If we’re going to lead a crusade about where part-time Delegates work for a living, let’s make sure we aren’t closing the left eye.

    Brian,
Pretty telling that the only defense of Phil in the GOP blogosphere is your contention that “Dems do it too.”
You’re right, they do. And it’s wrong for them too.
The Miller situation seems a little different from the Hamilton situation in that I don’t see the explicit quid pro quo that the e-mails reveal in the Hamilton case. But she still shouldn’t do it.
BTW, our “part-time” legislators make at least $36k per year if we are honestly assessing their salaries…their $18K office allowance for which they don’t have to account and which the IRS thus counts as income often gets forgotten….How much do you think we should pay someone for a job that only takes up three months of the year at most?

    Lol

Brian: I believe she had the same job with the VB sheriffs office. You really can’t make a case…but you can try.

I do agree that neither party should get a free pass on bills and legislation. Hamilton put himself into a deal situation and it is just wrong and may even be criminal. Do you have any emails on the Miller deal? Not likely to exist as she has held this type job in VB for several years.

Brian, you know that Sheriff’s Office funding is done through the State Compensation Board, right? The General Assembly appropriates the funding and the Compensation Board decides which agencies get what money using previously set formulas.

And as for HB 2574, the Line of Duty Act provides compensation for those that are killed in the line of duty. Have we gotten to the point where we’re complaining about that? I would love to know when the last time an elected Sheriff became eligible for those benefits too.

Timothy, I don’t want to be complaining about all these insider hirings. I’d much rather be talking about issues.

    Remember issues?

The thing that Democrats are SUPPOSED to be interested in?

Democrats are losing on the issues this year, so here we are talking about what part-time legislators do for a living.

Is it perfectly legal for the Norfolk Sheriff to hold a job open and hand it to a Norfolk legislator. No interviews? No advertising? Just a wink and a phone call?

I don’t know. I ain’t thrilled with what went on between ODU and Hamilton, but if we’re going to walk down this road, I’m gonna make darn sure people know there’s more than one sidewalk alongside it.

Hamilton has to go. Lining your pockets as an elected official is unacceptable. Shame on him. Phil is a loser. Don’t spend a penny or a breath of air to defend him. Resign now, Werewolf.
