Another GOP Voice Joins the Growing List of Biden Supporters

Another voice joins the growing chorus of Republicans who will not vote for Donald Trump in November but will, instead, vote for President Joe Biden … and have been courageous enough to publicly share that decision.

The latest is Georgia’s former Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan (R) who wrote this week of his decision and the reasons for the decision. In the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he noted that “the GOP will never rebuild until we move on from the Trump era.” That, he said, leaves Republicans like him “no choice but to pull the lever for Biden.”

After laying out his case for voting for Biden, Duncan ends with this:

“The healing of the Republican Party cannot begin with Trump as president (and that’s aside from the untold damage that potentially awaits our country). A  Time magazine cover story lays out in stark terms ‘the outlines of an imperial presidency that would reshape America and its role in the world.’ ”

Geoff Duncan is correct. Many of us thought the healing would begin after the January 6, 2021, insurrection by GOP MAGA Trump loyalists on the U.S. Capitol. But in a whiplash turnabout, within weeks almost the entire party flipped right back to again embrace Trump.

So here we are three years later with court cases, dozens of criminal charges, a conviction in a civil sexual abuse case, and a cleared path to become the GOP presidential nominee. They couldn’t even sit out one election to give the party time to recover.

Something I have noticed about Republicans who are supporting Biden is they have very clear-cut reasons for their decision, as Duncan laid out in his opinion piece. Their reasons for not supporting Trump are just as clear.

The 2024 election is the most important one in my lifetime. Yeah yeah yeah … political parties say that every year. But when have you seen such a growing number of Republicans supporting a Democratic president’s re-election?

The danger for the GOP may be that it could “trickle down,” so to speak, to their down-ticket candidates. It speaks to the danger of Donald Trump and his loyalists, and the damage to not only the GOP and our nation but also to world order, perhaps the most dire threat since World War II.
