View From the Editor’s Desk: Latest Mass Shooting in Lewiston, Maine
It’s a sad day with another mass shooting in America: Manhunt for suspect in 18 deaths continues (Washington Post gift article).
Three weeks ago my husband and I had spent over a week on the coast of Maine and then drove back roads across the state heading west toward New Hampshire and Vermont. Our route took us through Lewiston, Maine, a city with a population a little larger than Staunton, that is the home of Bates College (where my congressman attended undergrad) and that overnight became a household word for much of America.
News broke Wednesday night that a gunman with an assault weapon had killed 18 (so far) with numerous injuries to more than a dozen victims.
Who knew that small city would be the site of the next big U.S. mass shooting?
It is a tragedy that continues to unfold because the gunman has not been apprehended. Families will be broken as we learn about the victims in the days to come….
The people of Maine were very kind and helpful during our time visiting their state in September and October. As more is learned about those who were killed and injured during Wednesday night’s shootings, families will be broken with news of loved ones who were killed. The people of Maine are in my prayers.
