WaPo: Get An E-Z Pass (Seriously)
Wanna know how you can rack up $8,335 in tolls?
It’s really easy… just have a malfunctioning E-Z Pass and let the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority club you like a baby seal:
Laniyan’s problems began May 11, 2015, when she drove through a Dulles Toll Road toll plaza, according to court documents. At the time, the judge said, she had more than $173 in her E-ZPass account, but the system did not register her car as having paid.
Over the next 24 days, Laniyan would rack up 13 other unpaid tolls. Laniyan did not realize that the tolls were not being collected. Infractions were issued, and Laniyan decided to challenge them, according to court documents.
But the judge said the forms that drivers must fill out to challenge tickets are unclear and therefore Laniyan did not send in the first page of her E-ZPass account statement, as is required to file an appeal.
The MWAA rejected Laniyan’s challenge, saying her account was not in good standing and that she had to pay the full amount of the tickets.
Situations such as these make you wonder why “just doing my job” is sufficient excuse for the handlers at WMAA…
