…and it’s not a small revision. From the press release:
The Amendment states: “The College Republican Federation of Virginia does not discriminate against its membership based on citizenship, color, disability, gender, race, religion, national origin or sexual orientation.”
This proposed amendment to the CRFV Constitution institutionalizes the values that the Republican Party stands for: being inclusive of all individuals who believe in the conservative principles of the Republican Party. The vote to announce this potential amendment was unanimously supported by all voting members of the CRFV Executive Board and any College Republican chapter chairs who attended the RPV Advance.
“The addition of this Amendment to the CRFV Constitution would ensure we carry the message that the Republican Party is a big tent party,” Chairwoman Kasha Nielsen said. “We offer inclusion to all individuals regardless of their background, and I think the overwhelming support by our Executive Board shows how important that is.”
So a couple things that are interesting about this new non-discrimination policy. First, it is perhaps one of the most libertarian-leaning statements from the CRFV in some time, indicating precisely where the future of the conservative movement really lies. Second, the unanimity is a strong sign that the future isn’t allowing conservatism to be defined by what or whom we are not. Third, there’s a specifically anti-Trump tone to it all… given the effort to include citizenship, religion, and national origin.
