Not to be out-done by the GOP changing its leadership, the Loyal Brotherhood of the Donkey is looking to the Tar Heel state to deliver them victories in 2014. Robert Dempsey is now the new executive director of the Democratic Party of Virginia, named mere days after the Republicans also switched executive directors.
Why do I feel like I’m watching “Annie Get Your Gun?”

Dempsey arrives just months after former executive director Lauren Harmon reportedly left her Virginia post following an 11-month run capped by political victory but dampened by organizational frustration, according to the Blue Virginia blog.
Dempsey parachutes into Virginia after being unceremoniously dumped in February by the Democratic chairman of a North Carolina state party in disarray, The News & Observer newspaper reported roughly two months ago.
Over 15 years in politics, the Buffalo, NY native has worked on local and state campaigns in multiple states; is a past executive director of the Vermont Democratic Party; and has Capitol Hill experience.
Why am I not surprised that DPVA would tap a Buffalo native to lead their efforts with a guy from Syracuse on the Third Floor of the Patrick Henry Building? I get the sense we’re rapidly moving towards a Pace commercial here in the commonwealth.
Regardless, I doubt Dempsey will have much trouble raising cash. Here’s a sample fundraising email that even I can write:
“Republicans seek to use Washington-style tactics to shutdown the government in Virginia. These extreme, right-wing ideologues refuse to close the healthcare coverage gap for 400,000 Virginians with their ongoing war on women. Help keep these tea party extremists in check with your $2 donation to the Democratic Party of Virginia.”
