At his annual fundraising breakfast, Majority Leader Eric Cantor called on Virginia legislators to resist “Medicaid – Obamacare – expansion.”
Appearing along with House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, Cantor and Ryan spoke at the Greater Richmond Convention Center about restoring the American dream and opportunity.
Cantor called the prospects of expanding Medicaid something “none of us want to see” and went on the offense against President Barack Obama stating that his failed policies require Republican alternatives and solutions.
The leader also expressed frustration with the media and Democratic partisans about portraying that the GOP is not offering solutions. He once again asked the president to work with Republicans at passing legislation for the benefit of the country.
Cantor introduced Ryan by recalling the 2006 election where Republicans lost the majority in the House and how he, Ryan, and Majority Whip Kevin McArthy came together to forge a “new Republican party.”
“The Republican party must not just be a party of opposition, but a party of ideas,” Ryan elaborated. “We have to show we’re capable of governing and leading the country. We have to have better ideas. Everybody knows our opposition, but not everybody knows we have better ideas.”
Ryan explained that the GOP must offer alternative solutions for energy, the economy, bolstering entrepreneurship, education, national defense and health care.
Of Cantor, Ryan called him a conservative who is “principled, smart, and knows how to get things done”, which is why the GOP caucus consistently re-elects him as GOP leader.
Ed Gillepsie, candidate for the Republican US Senate nomination, and Del. Barbara Comstock, candidate for the 10th House Congressional District GOP nomination were also in attendance and endorsed by both Cantor and Ryan.
“She will keep the district red,” Ryan said of Comstock.
In front of more than 1500 supporters at the event, Ryan concluded by calling for GOP unity to ensure America hears a strong, alternative conservative message to the Democrats and the president.
