Conversation the other day went around the highly noticeable lack of acorns just about everywhere. Richmond Times-Dispatch picked up on this as well:
The Virginia Department of Forestry and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said reports from various parts of the state indicate that the acorn crop is very light.
Factors such as weather, insects and disease could play into the change in crop levels.
Officials say each year’s crop is the subject of much attention because they are both an important source of forest regeneration and as a preferred food for wildlife.
…and those devilish little squirrels, which my army of cats have been devouring as so many tree rats.
Of course, what can we blame for this dearth of acornage?
These critters.
You’ll notice that earlier this year, most every oak tree was lovingly pruned by these land shrimp. So when it comes time for acorn season, guess what the oak trees can’t produce as much of? That’s right — acorns.
Blame the cicadas.
