Following up on Shaun’s post…the Department of Justice has decided that Hanover county and the town of Ashland have been free of racist tendencies for at least a decade now, so it will support their request to no longer have “…to get the permission of the Justice Department or a federal judge before making changes in voting procedures.”
A victory for progress and common sense? Yes. Unless you happen to have a vested interest in the status quo:
The Hanover Democratic Committee and NAACP branch had asked the Department of Justice to deny the request.
Robert Barnette, president of the NAACP’s Hanover branch, said Monday night that his group will “continue to oppose” the change in order to preserve oversight by the Justice Department.
“We feel that the politicians and people who are in decision-making authority act differently when they know that someone else is looking over their shoulders,” Barnette said.
He added that some people have experienced voting trouble in Hanover, but the issues haven’t been documented. Should discrepancies occur in the future, he said, the NAACP “will definitely bring it to someone’s attention.”
Gordon Silver, chairman of the Hanover County Democratic Committee, called the announcement disappointing.
“It doesn’t really give us any information as to why they feel that it’s totally appropriate to exempt them,” Silver said.

You see, when your power evolves from propagating the victim mentality, and an authoritarian declaration that there are no longer any victims then you are powerless. So instead of celebrating this achievement, they bemoan it. Sad, very very sad.
One can only imagine their level of discontent in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
