The Problem With Government Cheese

Clyde is on vacation this week and his place is closed, so it’s just you and me. Let’s get serious.

If you’re like me you have liberal Democrat friends that drive you nuts when they try to discuss politics. Really, I do have them. Most of my liberal friends know better and refrain from even bringing up the subject. Especially going to great pains by now to avoid the use of the word ‘greed’ in my presence. I’ve put them on the spot too many times by asking who gets to decide what’s too much. Is Oprah greedy? Michael Jordan? Barry Bonds? Or even Tom Hanks? Was Steve Jobs? Is Bill Gates? Or me, an unemployed, disabled engineer who used to make a bunch of money?

Their latest abuse of the facts come in the form of accusing Republicans of balling up the real work in Congress. That’s what they’ve been told, by so many people, Cough cough, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann, that it just has to be true.

Let’s enlighten our liberal friends.

First, let’s get rid of the notion that “nothing is getting done.” I won’t argue that Harry Reid doesn’t suffer from serious constipation, but sometimes he does send out a floater.

Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act: H.R. 4 – Passed the House, passed the Senate, signed into law by the President on April 14, 2011

3% Withholding Rule Repeal: H.R. 674 – Passed the House, passed the Senate signed into law by the President on November 21, 2011

Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012: H.R. 3630 – Passed the House, passed the Senate, signed into law by the President on February 22, 2012

US Columbia, Panama, and Korea Trade Agreements: Passed the House, passed the Senate, signed into law by the President in October 2011.

And there’s more, but you get the picture. Send something to the Senate that Harry Reid does not feel threatened by, and it will probably pass.

Except this one; FDA Safety and Innovation Act: S. 3187 – Passed the House, passed the Senate. That’s all. Maybe Obama has also eaten too much Government Cheese.

Let’s move on to the Republican obstructionists.

There are too many to list here, but I count at least 36 job creation bills that have passed the House, but constipated Harry can’t seem to squeeze one out. Including;

Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act: H.R. 872 – Passed the House, senate has taken no action to date

And Energy Tax Prevention Act: H.R. 910 – Passed the House, senate has taken no action to date

The effort to prevent the largest tax increase in America’s history, impacting low and middle-income earners the hardest, the repeal of PPACP or Obama-care, has passed the House 33 times. The latest coming only yesterday. Harry may just sit there straining on this one as well.

But this one is crucial. Especially if you’re oh, let’s say a 27-year-old shift manager at a trendy coffee shop. You’ve just lost coverage on mommy and daddy’s insurance policy, and with no insurance of your own, you have to either buy some or pay a tax. Welcome to the real world kid.
