The scribes at the Virginian-Pilot were on a roll in today’s Editorial. They were actually correct until they got silly.
They saw the Democrats’ “issue of the week” protests for what they were: fake concerns. Democrats have become a legislative Columbo, always wanting “just one more thing.”
Let’s be clear: Every Democrat protest this year had absolutely nothing to do with the actual issue.
Ultrasounds, schmultrasounds. Budget, schmudget. Anyone who thinks Senators across Virginia would fall on their collective swords for the Dulles toll road needs to be gagged and beaten on general principle.
All this fake outrage was about besmirching Gov. Bob McDonnell’s national image.
But on the hope that they obvious wasn’t true, the Virginian-Pilot pretends that Democrats actually care about transportation.
Now, if senators are truly serious about reforming transportation funding, they should call for a special session to resolve the issue and then find a way to negotiate a real and lasting solution.

With the way that Democrats consistently acted in bad faith, accepting no compromise and no outreach and accepting no middle ground whatsoever, why would anyone give them a special session that would require compromise, middle ground and good faith?
On ultrasound, McDonnell offered amendments to moderate the bill. Democrats didn’t care. On the budget, the Democrats got almost every last-minute request they wanted. Then they invented a need for Dulles toll money, and without it, all but one Democrat voted to kill the entire Virginia budget!
What idiot would want to work with such neanderthals?
Negotiation? Compromise? A Jedi craves not these things, and neither do Democrats. They have McDonnell on the brain, and they only want to smear their own pitiful failings on him.
No special session for transportation. Not with these 19 Senators.
Next year, Democrats can nominate someone who actually campaigns on a transportation solution plan. Deeds didn’t. Kaine didn’t. Warner didn’t. Beyer didn’t. Heck, even Baliles didn’t.
Campaign on your ideas, Democrats. Otherwise, leave us alone.
