Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment took to the floor of the state Senate yesterday (despite his trepidation that “some blogger – whatever a blog is” might post his comments) to voice his concern over Democratic hyperbole, critical of law enforcement for enforcing the law regarding protests in Capitol Square:
Norment was responding to comments made by Democrats characterizing the presence of Virginia Capitol and State Police during the weekend’s protests as “disgraceful.”
Norment, a Republican from James City, spoke with clarity regarding the balance between the first amendment and individual security rights, and championed the response of the police at protecting all legislators and their support staff during the protests – something the police are charged to do. He characterized the comments being made against the police as “disingenuous.”
