James Comey Hearing With Senate Intelligence Committee

The most anticipated hearing in Washington, D.C., in years had people who were hoping to get a coveted seat lining up at 4:00 a.m. Thursday outside the door of the meeting room in the Hart Senate Office Building. Fired FBI Director James Comey’s written statement was released Wednesday prior to today’s testimony.

As the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence hearing began, the room was packed with media, senators, and spectators, and was being live-streamed by networks, cable, and online news outlets.

After this morning’s testimony, the committee is scheduled to reconvene at 1pm today for a closed session.

10:05am: Hearing convenes with Chairman Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) noting this will be Comey’s opportunity to set the record straight. Vice-Chair Senator Mark Warner (D-Va) who noted the hearing had been the focus of Washington the past few days.

10:18am: James Comey sworn in and begins with opening comments. His statement, submitted on Wednesday, is already on the record.

10:23am: Questioning began with Sen. Burr.

10:35am: Questioning from Sen. Warner.

Various senators asked questions throughout the morning.

12:30pm: Sen. John McCain, chairman of Senate Armed Services Committee, questioned Director Comey.

12:38pm: Questioning is completed by Sen. McCain and Sen. Burr is thanking Jim Comey for his dedication and service to the country, echoed by Sen. Warner who said there were still many questions that the committee will follow up on and get answers.

12:42pm: Hearing is over. Chairman Burr has instructed committee members they will reconvene in closed session promptly at 1:00pm, about 18 minutes away.
