Trump visits Liberty

Donald Trump became the third presidential candidate to visit Liberty University’s convocation as of today.

Trump succeeds both Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz who have visited the Lynchburg gathering.

Politico reports that the most significant part of Trump’s speech is he referenced “Two Corinthians,” instead of “Second Corinthians.”

“We’re going to protect Christianity. I can say that. I don’t have to be politically correct,” he said. “Two Corinthians, 3:17, that’s the whole ballgame … is that the one you like?”

The verse, “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty,” seems to have been Trump’s attempt to ingratiate himself to the audience of religious students.
But the crowd tittered and several of the students audibly corrected him, pointing out that Christians say “second Corinthians,” not “two Corinthians.”

Is this, honestly, what it has come down to?

Perhaps an inaccurate book/chapter/verse reference is something worth considering, if we veer cynical and are looking to be critical. That said, I am more inclined to think that referencing the Holy Spirit in the context of our national leadership is a pretty good thing. And, reminding people of the Spirit’s role in religious free will and liberty is also something worth remembering.
