For the first time, the Club for Growth is endorsing in the presidential race – although not just one candidate. Given the breadth and strength of the 2016 field, the Club decided to “help” five candidates “stand out from the rest.”
Four are likely not a surprise: Senators Rubio, Cruz, and Paul, along with Governor Scott Walker. The fifth may not be so expected (Dallas Morning News).
“Five candidates are at the forefront of the Republican presidential field on issues of economic freedom, and the Club for Growth PAC is standing with them to help them stand out from the rest,” said the group’s president, David McIntosh. “Senators Cruz, Paul, and Rubio have walked the talk, and have led on pro-growth issues at every opportunity in the Senate.”
McIntosh, a former Indiana congressman, also cited Walker’s fight with unions in Wisconsin, and Bush’s “solid record on tax cuts as governor of Florida.” The group won’t endorse an individual contender, but will encourage its donor network to support all five picks.
Bush’s inclusion is a big win for the former Florida Governor. CFG has been taking aim at tax-hiking Republicans since the Tea Party was still only a historical reference. Jeb Bush has been trying to convince conservative Republicans that he really is one of them. This will go a long way with economic conservatives.
Also, hopefully, it will encourage supporters of each of these five candidates (which includes yours truly, a supporter of Rubio) to remember the others on the list as the primaries, caucuses, and candidate withdrawals approach.
