In late February, state Senator Jeff McWaters surprised just about everyone with his announcement that he would not seek reelection in Virginia’s 8th Senate District. But he did not surprise Del. Bill DeSteph (R-82, Virginia Beach) who immediately announced his candidacy to succeed him, complete with McWaters’ endorsement.
However, despite running a $30k advantage over his potential Democratic opponent, Dave Belote, DeSteph still must clear the GOP primary on June 9th.
In this podcast, DeSteph talks about his rationale for making the leap after just one term from delegate to senator, his background as a Navy veteran and successful entrepreneur, and the polices he hopes to implement as a state senator.
“[I’m interested in] creating an environment for businesses and families to thrive,” said DeSteph. “And the best way to do that is lower taxes, less regulation and less litigation. So, [we need to] clarify our laws, push back regulation that’s overburdening, and make sure that we don’t have taxes that choke out our businesses.”
DeSteph also relayed an interesting vignette about his time in the House of Delegates where Del. Jen McLellan wanted to cost the state billions of dollars without knowing really what she was doing. What a surprise! The moral of the story: committee assignments matter.
