Kids in the wrong school?….how dare they!
Imagine a kid “cheating” the system! Don’t these kids (and their parents) understand the government lines? And thank goodness we have lines! We can’t have kids just going to any school they want! Of course, that kind of freedom is only available in every other aspect of our lives when we have to choose. We choose our own grocery store, cleaners, gym, golf course, etc. Why would anyone think we could handle choosing schools?
The good news is that someone is going to stop these rogue kids:
Henrico County is poised to increase its efforts to ferret out students who attend its schools but do not live in the county.……includes an extra $100,000 set aside specifically for expanding the effort.
$100k! Go get them Henrico. Although, I could think of better ways to spend $100k.
Last school year, HCPS identified approximately 75 out-of-district students,” wrote Terry S. Stone, the school division’s assistant superintendent for finance and administration.
75? I am shocked! What a staggering degree of lawlessness.
The extra money will allow officials to hire extra temporary help as needed to help run down leads on student residency issues
Run down? Really? Is that the term we want to use for kids just trying to attend a school that fits their needs? Sounds so…bureaucratic. What’s next? Using terms like “red-flag?”
…educate staff to better identify “red flags” that indicate a student might not live at his or her listed address.

Our current system created this mess. It draws lines that politicians feel work the best. Allow nice neighborhoods with plenty of money to have the best schools, and then have the power to punish those who wander in.
It will take courage to fix. Not more money, but a complete change of direction that allows the money to be tied to the child. The child can go wherever they want, and the money follows. But I am not holding my breath. The latest charter school bill passed the Senate passed along party lines, with all Republicans voting for choice, and all Democrats opposed.
And you thought Democrats were pro-choice? Think again…
