(Updated w/Obenshain endorsement) Whitbeck looks strong for next RPV Chair

John Whitbeck, chairman of the 10th Congressional District of the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV), appears to be in the driver seat with respect to becoming the next chairman of the RPV.

Tonight, his most public opposition, Eric Herr, chairman in the 1st Congressional District, has decided to no longer mount his challenge for the post being vacated by the retiring Pat Mullins.

Whitbeck has the support of a large block of State Central Committee voters (the state decision making body of the party consisting of activists from all across the commonwealth and, by and large, formed by the 11 congressional districts and auxiliary organizations such as College, Young, and Women Republicans).

The block is called the “conservative fellowship” and currently makes up more than 50% of the RPV SCC vote. With Herr’s departure, that block is now likely to be united behind Whitbeck.

Under Whitbeck’s leadership in the 10th District, the party modernized its voter identification efforts, improved fundraising, and supported Congresswoman-elect Barbara Comstock’s keeping the congressional seat in GOP hands.

Rumors are circulating that Virginia Beach Pastor Anthony Wheeler may enter the race, but would he be able to peel off votes from a fairly strong caucus?

The vote for party chair will occur by SCC in January.
