If IDs are discrimination, then be consistent
By | Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 | Politics

Liberals are like Gremlins.

Remember the movie? All cute and fuzzy, but throw some water on them and they reveal their nasty, monstrous selves.

I wish the press would dump some water on the nonsensical ravings of liberal loonies who crowded the General Assembly lately to claim that efforts to require identification at the polls to vote are discrimination.

“Democrats say the proposed change is an attempt to disenfranchise minorities, students, the elderly and poor ahead of the presidential election.” (RTD)

WOW! Being asked to present an ID is discriminatory to minorities, students, the elderly, and the poor?

DMV better expect a lawsuit!

See, currently, they won’t allow someone to drive without a license. Someone should tell them that minorities, students, the elderly and the poor should be able to drive without it.

We should quickly tell State Troopers to say to speeding roadsters, “License and registration, please, unless you’re a minority, student, elderly or poor.”

The Governor should issue an Executive Order to all ABC stores to stop carding minorities, students, the elderly and the poor.

Banks! If minorities, students, the elderly or the poor come to you to cash a check, don’t ask for ID. It’s discriminatory.

And my favorite example!

Gun purchases! To use liberals’ logic, it is discriminatory to require minorities, students, the elderly or the poor to submit to a background check to buy a gun.

Keep that ID in your pocket. It’s discrimination to ask for it, but only if the gun buyer is a minority, a student, elderly or poor.

So, liberals have a dilemma.

A) Requiring ID is discriminatory against minorities, students, the elderly and the poor, and requirements to present ID to vote, to drive, to purchase alcohol, to cash checks and to buy a gun should be banned for minorities, students, the elderly and the poor.

or

B) The discrimination outcry about voters presenting ID to vote is a fake concern and ID requirements aren’t discriminatory at all.

Until I see Democrats filing bills to do (A), we must assume (B).

Splash, Gremlin!

Great analogy, Brian … showing the hypocrisy of the left in what should be a non-issue.

Best post on Bearing Drift for 2012!

You need a photo ID to vote in a union election.

  4. Norman Leahy February 1, 2012 11:08 am

You need photo ID to buy Sudafed. Allergy and cold sufferers are the victims of rank discrimination!

It used to be the right was against voter ID at the polls and the Left was for it. Now the left is against it and the right is for it.

Just like the right used to be against national ID and the left was for it. Now the the right is for it, and the left..well I am not sure where they are on it…I think they are still for it.

This shows me the Left and the Right are more and more the same, except on issues that keep us little people fighting and distract us from how they agree on 90% of all other issues. And while we fight over those little issues they pass draconian legislation that steals our liberty and freedom.

Like Judge Andrew Napolitano says, there is one party with two heads, or two wings, that both like Big Government. Both wings like war and stealing our liberties (one likes to take our personal liberty the other like to steal our financial liberty).

Kirby, where does Ron Paul stand on voter ID?

  7. MD Russ February 1, 2012 12:00 pm

    Sara,

A Texas DPS trooper stopped Ron Paul on the highway one day and asked, “you got any ID?” Paul responded, “Bout what?”

    :)

  8. Sara February 1, 2012 12:11 pm

    MD — uh oh! :)

Seriously though, I understand Kirby’s frustration, but when the GOP is on the right side of the issue, what’s the point of criticism?

  9. MD Russ February 1, 2012 12:21 pm

    Sara,

But when has the GOP ever been on the left side of the issue?

  10. Sara February 1, 2012 12:23 pm

You probably shouldn’t ask that. There is more than one answer.

  11. Tim J February 1, 2012 12:32 pm

Minorities, Students, Elderly, Poor (MSEP) are the block of voters who the Dems figure outnumber the rest of the ID carrying population. If MSEP members have to produce IDs to vote, Dems are afraid that they will lose the ability to influence primaries and pack elections like the good ‘ol days.

  12. MD Russ February 1, 2012 12:39 pm

    Tim J,

The correct terminology for MSEP is “undocumented Democrats.”

Here are the votes on requiring Photo ID to buy Sudafed.
    http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?061+sum+SB146

There has been a lot of turnover in the H of D, but you can see a number of people who think it should be tougher to buy Sudafed than to vote.

  16. ToR February 2, 2012 01:35 am

How many cases of voter fraud have we had in Virginia in the last 10 years? Maybe knowing that will help put this in discussion in perspective.

Aside from the complete lack of needing this legislation I do have one logistical question:

It is a right (not a privilege) to vote and if we’re required to have an ID to vote; does that mean the state is now liable to pay for IDs for everyone?

f you read this site and like what you see, then hit that PayPal button. If you’re interested in keeping the postal monopoly alive for a little while longer, you can mail a check (made out to Virginia Line Media) to:

    P.O. Box 16828
    Chesapeake, Virginia 23328

If you’ve already given to the campaign, please accept my thanks. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated.

For those who haven’t…the time for soft pitches is over. Go to the PayPal link. Click on it. Fill in the required credit card information, including the dollar amount. Then hit submit.

    It’s that easy.

  18. Brian Kirwin February 2, 2012 07:58 am

TorR, everyone has a right to own a gun. That doesn’t mean the state has to buy me one.

Gosh, give me a real question.

As far as how many cases of voter fraud have we had and not caught? I don’t know how many people have gotten away with it until now.

  19. Tor February 2, 2012 15:54 pm

    Well Brian,

Here’s a case of voter fraud, of course it has nothing to do with actually voting:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/virginia-politics/post/cuccinelli-asked-to-probe-newt-gingrich-ballot-signature-irregularities/2012/01/14/gIQAP8mFzP_blog.html

We all know about the gun crimes in Virginia but it seems that “voter fraud” hasn’t existed until Newt got into the race.

  20. reality February 2, 2012 19:59 pm

“it’s not about who votes,it’s about who counts the votes” Stalin

  21. ToR February 2, 2012 22:28 pm

    Brian,

You are incorrect. Not everyone has a right to own a gun.

Off the top of your head you don’t know one case of voter fraud? I’m shocked, we have elections every years, sometimes multiple times a year and millions of people vote every year in Virginia. Yet, you still can’t name a single case of voter fraud. Come on Brian, isn’t this a big issue that’s really threatening our democracy?

I can think of numerous cases of gun violence without even thinking too hard. Yet the number of people that own, carry, or use guns is miniscule compared to the number of voters.

  22. Don Marco February 3, 2012 13:16 pm

Most cases of voter fraud have occurred in virtually 100% Democratic-enclaves in big cities such as Philadelphia, St. Louis and Milwaukee in which it HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED that more votes were cast than actual number of voters on the rolls. And the scoffers said the welfare underclass has no civic virtue and sense of responsibility. They sure do. They take their right to vote so seriously that they exercise it more than once. I guess ToR has never heard of ACORN.

  23. Jumping Jack February 4, 2012 08:48 am

Just look at the NH documentary drawing heat from the Daily Kos and moveon.org. A guy went to 10 different precincts and was successfully able to vote (although he backed out and didn’t) under dead NH names.
