Democracy is dead. The two party system is a hoax. Sinner, repent.
Back on October 25th, this was the topic of a Washington Post editorial that lamented the lack of competition in so many General Assembly races. While one can, and should, quibble with the Post’s conclusions, the piece did provide a laugh.
Consider this editorial which appeared in the Halloween edition of the Daily Progress. It’s headline is different from the Post editorial, but its content and conclusions are eerily similar. The reason can be found at the bottom of the copy:

So it would seem that independent thought is also near death — at least among some Virginia newspapers. Will this result in publications that “…lack[] any incentive to compromise or seek common ground”?
Not immediately. But a few of them are moving closer to the ultimate common ground and final, lasting, compromise: the grave.
