Dems going down without a fight
By Georgie Gale | Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 | PoliticsIn a follow up to Mayor Helsel’s win yesterday, WAVY News 10 is reporting that the Democratic canvass has been cancelled. Were they unable to find a decent candidate? Or perhaps they just realized that it was a district they just couldn’t win.
All I have to say is, welcome to the General Assembly, Delegate Helsel!

From what I’ve heard, the 91st is one of the most conservative districts in the state, so any chance of a Democratic victory would be very slim. After all, back in 2009, Gear (R) got first, Helsel (I) got second, and Eure (D) placed a distant third. I guess the Democrats couldn’t find anyone willing to ante up for the very long shot prospect.
Congrats to Helsel for his win!

Even though he is really a Democrat at heart, Helsel has an amazing turnout machine. It’s not his fault that anybody can vote in a Republican primary; he just played by the rules that govern the election. I admire his skills and congratulate him. I hear he’s a nice guy, though anyone being truthful knows that a politician supported by the money and votes of the IBEW and the Eastern Virginia Labor Federation is no conservative.
That being said, at least we have a nice man who ran a clean campaign. As we all saw from the mailouts last weekend, we could have ended up with the group who ran that sinister campaign.
I was very favorably impressed with Mayor Helsel’s actions while serving he was serving on the now defunct unconstitutional HRTA (Hampton Roads Transportation Authority). I believe he will fit well in Delegate Tom Gear’s shoes. I really liked Tom Gear.
