Is this Jim Webb’s Signal that He’s Running Again?
By Ward Smythe | Thursday, January 13th, 2011 | Politics
The man speaking Tuesday at the Norfolk Forum didn’t sound like a man who wants a cabinet appointment:
The Obama Administration…”did a really terrible job handling health care reform…You can’t turn something that complicated loose on the United States Congress…People got scared. People got mad…. We lost an enormous amount of time on health care…. Both sides made bad mistakes.” [PilotOnline.com]
Oh sure, he says that now.
Webb supported the health care bill and voted for it twice. But somewhere around…oh…November of last year…Webb started talking about how he warned the President that health care would be a “disaster.” [Real Clear Politics]
Yes, I know, even at the time of his vote, Webb said he had some misgivings about the bill.
But. He. Still. Voted. Yes.
At the time of the vote he issued a statement and said, “In the end, I voted in favor of the legislation despite some serious misgivings with portions of it because it does represent a true step forward in terms of quality, accessibility and affordability of health care for most Americans.”
That’s how he describes “disaster?”
He was right though, that the bill was a disaster…for the White House and the Democratic Party. I suspect he also knows that it could be a disaster for him in 2012. That of course has led to the speculation that he won’t run again and that perhaps he would like to have an appointment in the Obama Administration.
Calling the President’s signature legislation a “disaster” is a funny way to get there.

Say what you will, no one can ever accuse Jim Webb of being a “Politician”.
Jim Webb is a John Kerry kind of Dem. He is a contemptible Senator because of his basic dishonesty and attempted deceit with VA voters. Remember his flagrantly two faced “proposal to restrict affirmative action” before the election? Ever hear of it again? Remember his cute little ads saying he voted against Medicare cuts in Obamacare – before he voted for them. He needs to be defeated; hopefully trounced.
@J.Nowlin,
Oh please, I wouldn’t even accuse him of being a Senator.
And what has the senior Senator from Virginia done to force the District of Columbia to abide by the Heller Decision, even though he carries concealed in the District while other CCW permitted Virginia citizens cannot?
“Born hypocritical” is more like it. When Shakespeare wrote about “the insolence of office” in Hamlet, he accurately described Jim Webb.

Jim Webb has been in office and has a voting record. If you don’t like his voting record vote against him. Why do you call him dishonest and “Born hypocritical”. Jim Webb has served with valor in the military and has served with honor in every public office he has held. I wonder if anyone the Republicans can offer a candidate with a record to his. Why don’t you stick to the facts and stop the name calling. Remember what name calling got George Allen.

Dear Louise,
Specifics were clearly provided above but leftists are prone to ignore inconvenient truths. No one criticized his military record. Last time I checked he is not Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a Senator. Is it our fault he has behaved the way he has as Senator for the Dems? Its true that modern Senate Dems are a bad lot of gangster socialists but he didn’t have to emulate them. As for the name calling with George Allen, your memory is mixed up. That was your fellow leftists at the Washington Post allied with the Webb campaign making macaca sounds.
Louis,
Apologies for the name change but the edit function is no longer available.
“Webb said : The Obama Administration…”did a really terrible job handling health care reform…You can’t turn something that complicated loose on the United States Congress…People got scared. People got mad….”
By the way didn’t William Daley say roughly the same thing and look what happened to him. Maybe Webb will get a Cabinet post after all? or VP in 2012??
