Spend as I say
By | Saturday, November 27th, 2010 | Politics

This shouldn’t surprise me but Republicans can’t stop themselves from spending more than they ever have on their next convention. Among being completely hypocritical it also hurts whoever the 2012 presidential candidate is. Perhaps this will be another nail in Steele’s coffin but somehow I think there’s more to come.

Nothing but a thinly disguised hit piece on Steele..

@turbo, hit piece just on Steele? how about the entire Old Republican Guard that don’t seem to understand that citizens are tired of reckless spending?

Maybe I’m confused but is the Republican convention funded mostly by taxpayers? If they don’t, then what business is it of anyone what they do with private contributions?

@valentinus, as someone who regularly donates to Republican candidates, clubs, and causes as I assume probably half the readers of BearingDrift do, it is a concern to us. I’m not advocating any sort of public hearing or govt investigation, but since I’m sure part of my donations ends up funding the convention, I thought it was appropriate in the context of BD especially since Republicans have supposedly recommitted themselves to fiscal responsibility.

I promise in the future to complete my sentences even with the blindingly obvious: what business is it of anyone (other than the contributors) what they do?

Perhaps in more normal times more of us could get exercised by this. At the moment, though I dislike melodramatics, many people including myself feel the country as we know it is really at stake. I think we need to stay focused on the most critical issues until not only individual Dems are defeated but their whole blighted agenda is broadly discredited as well.

@valentinus, I also believe the country is at stake but I also believe it was the Republicans just as much as the Democrats that got us in to our current predicament. I believe we need to hold Republicans to a higher standard especially in this renewed sense of conservatism. by expressing anger over wasteful spending on conventions, etc. I hope it also sends a message to current office holders not to lose sight of fiscal responsibility.

valentinus, if we want to talk the talk, we need to walk the walk. If times are still hard in 2012 it will look bad to host an over the top, over spent convention. You are right that at the core, it should only matter to those of us who have donated, but let’s take a look back at the DNC convention 2008. The media image looked horrible. They were spending money on food arrangements that could only be certain colors as to make sure they were being “eco friendly.” Is that the image we want?

  8. LiveFreeOrDieVA November 29, 2010 13:21 pm

@dan no, that is NOT the image we want. we need to show that we are committed to fiscal discipline not just at the federal, state, and local level, but the PARTY level as well. America is watching us!!
