Wow – Raese at 50%

Rasmussen‘s latest poll on the West Virginia race has Republican John Raese at 50%. This comes after the Manchin endorsements from normally GOP-friendly groups like the national Chamber of Commerce and the NRA.
Meanwhile, the NRSC has a new ad on the race (via Battle ’10) that subtlely hits on a theme I think is still vastly underestimated: Joe Manchin is so good as Governor that he needs to stay there instead of going to Washington.

I thought the NRSC ad was not all that subtle with the “West Virginia Joe is a pretty good Governor” vs the “Washington Joe is a different person.” Interesting race though. Raesel’s slogan is the “10th seat” but as the Cook Report noted that with the Delaware senate seat pretty an impossibility, that is probably not going to happen. It does like Murkowski might be able to pull it out with her write-in campaign in Alaska–but that is not a pick-up for the GOP.
“Joe Manchin is so good as Governor that he needs to stay there instead of going to Washington.”
this is kind of the same dynamic as the weld v kerry race back in the 90s. Weld was a very popular republican governor of massachusetts (had just won relection with 72% of the vote 2 years earlier), but people voted for kerry because 1. a vote for weld was a vote for dole, and 2. a vote for weld meant we had to lose him as governor. Kerry ended up winning by about 4 points.
West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin appears in a new television ad firing a gun, while telling viewers he will “take on Washington and this administration and get the federal government off our backs and out of our pockets.”
So Manchin is blasting cap and tax while Feingold is now asking members of the Tea Party to vote for him. Must be a bit of trouble for some candidates.
