I guess some of the inside the beltway DC Chamber liked the face that Nye voted for the stimulus bill that included bailouts for AIG executives.
Groups like the Chamber and the NRA endorse an incumbent every chance they get, so not that big of a surprise.
The “US” group is clearly clueless, so I can totally disregard that alleged endorsement. Scott Rigell has been inducted into the Hampton Roads Business Hall of Fame, and that is what counts. Glenn Nye has ZERO business experience whatsoever. Who cares about what some DC-based group thinks. That’s what we’re getting away from. Scott Rigell is a well known and well respected local businessman. He knows what the issues are here in Hampton Roads, and that is why he will represent us so well.
The USCC endorsement tell me they are a mischaracterized entity.
LC, On a side note, Scott refused to attend a forum or debate at the HRCC with all three of the candidates. An HRCC member and a member of the press stated that Nye and Kenny did not want to do a 3 way forum, this was not the case so I set the record straight.
After the debacle of the republican pledge at the hardware store, it is not surprising that a business group would jump off the republican bandwagon and into the Nye camp. Fact is, with Boehner and Cantor basically pledging to do just what Bush did to create the decade of decline, why would any rational business person want to go through that again? Fact is, regulatory reform and deficit reduction combined with a return to pay go is a business friendly concept, while the Boehner/Cantor team will take us backwards again. No thanks.
The people have a choice between lower tax republicans or food stamp democrats in 5 weeks.
Actually, James forgets that middle class americans who make up 98% of the population can be assured of a tax cut if the republicans would withdraw their opposition. They want to hold the middle class hostage to wealthy, high net worth millionaires. I for one want Congress to act on the middle class tax cuts, and leave in place higher tax rates on the rich that will immediately go to deficit reduction. That combined with the implementation of pay go in Congress will immediately help to move toward a balanced budget.
Just found out from the Chamber website that they supported the failed Obama/Pelosi/Nye “stimulus” bill.
No wonder they endorsed him.
The “failed stimulus bill”? Do you realize that if we had not had the bill that our unemployment rate would be close to 20%. Can you fathom the effect of that kind of unemployment rate on main streets throughout this nation? Would Rigell’s dealerships have survived that kind of economic disruption? Of course not, and while TARP and stimulus were not perfect, they saved this nation from economic ruin caused by Bush’s economic policies. That’s why the Chamber endorsed Nye.
But Mike… Nye didn’t vote for the stimulus.
Yes, I’m sure your tongue is firmly implanted in your cheek. He did of course vote for the Stimulus Bill as did most members of Congress. Thank goodness they did, or the World economies would not be back on the road to full recovery. How any self respecting independent or tea party member could not realize that the republican pledge is simply an invitation to financial ruin, again, is beyond me. Fact is, the middle class has been dying since Bush took office, and has been in recovery since Obama was elected. Don’t confuse the pace of recovery with the fact that it is undeniably taking place.
@Mike Barrett
The President’s own top economic advisor and Chief of the President’s Council of Economic advisors said that if we do NOT pass the stimulus bill unemployment would be approaching 10%.
She also said that if we DO pass the stimulus bill, unemployment would stay below 8%.
Unemployment is at 9.7% and has been around 10% for over 6 months now.
So, yes, by the very standard set forth by this President, it has FAILED, FAILED, FAILED, FAILED, FAILED.
@MB. Only in a liberal word view where every human endeavor is a taxable event can one say that not repealing a tax is a tax cut. WTF? And the middle class started dwindling with George W? WTF? That started with Jimmy Carter. I realize many on this site weren’t even born then, but you really do need to get your facts straight.
As for the US Chamber of Commerce endorsing Nye. I have to agree, that is pathetic. It just goes to show how even people like me can end up being Teabaggers. BTW, the initials HRCC I’m sure meant Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. It also stands for Human Rights Campaign Committee, a huge gay rights group with lots of money. So watch when using all these nifty initials. Some may get the wrong idea. Unless of course you are gay and own a business in Hampton Roads, as I am sure many do.
Well Craig, you are seriously confused. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce are simply separate and distinct organizations. The same is true of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is made up of the nation’s largest corporations, so their endorsement of Congressman Nye is particularly significant. Many were seriously threatened with collapse because of the Bush fiscal policies; even if you are a life long republican, it is hard to want those policies back again, especially as many have recovered and are doing just fine now.
Or you could look at that Nye is a member of the true majority party….the friends of corporate America. So is Mark Warner, given his vote to sustain a Republican filibuster of a bill to punish companies for taking American jobs offshore. That covers the majority of BOTH the major parties.
I don’t think that Mike or Craig can back up the premise that the middle class has been “dying” for many years. The data is simply not there, unless it is from the last two years.
KS… “cough, cough… wheeezzz..” we patients in the middle class have been sick for many years, and only in the past two years have we felt that we are marching lockstep in our agony towards the terminal end of our “American Dream”.
Obama, Democrats and Liberals share an amazing philosophical basis with the insufferable Jack Kevorkian who once said… “… it is my duty to evaluate the situation with as much data as I can gather and as much expertise as I have and as much experience as I have to determine whether or not the wish of the patient is medically (politically) justified.”
And then a comment by the good doctor that is relevant to our current political leadership … ” What looks like enjoyment (a smile) is the sneer of contempt. That’s not a smile.”
Somehow, the food stamp democrats have erected this construct where they can extend most of the Bush tax cuts and increase the deficit by more than $3 trillion over a decade, and that’s responsible. Whereas, if Republicans want to add earners who pay the highest taxes — increasing the tab by another $700 billion in an effort to save jobs — they’re irresponsible hypocrites.
Also starting to hear that the demos want to claim that anyone who makes 100K or more is “rich”.
Time to end the relationship with the Chamber.
