Health Physics Group endorses Uranium mining at Coles Hill
By | Monday, August 30th, 2010 | Policy

In an op-ed last week the Virginia Chapter of the Health Physics Society (an organization dedicated to “promote excellence in the science and practice of radiation safety”) stated that Uranium mining in Southern Virginia was good for the economy and smart energy policy.

Carter Ficklen, Virginia head of the organization, wrote that “uranium mining in the Commonwealth of Virginia can and should be pursued.”

The endorsement characterized that mining was safe, well-regulated, and necessary given energy demands. It also stated that the site is required by law to be restored to its “original condition.”

Ficklen writes:

“The proposed mining endeavors can be carried out with minimal impact on the environmental quality of the surrounding areas while simultaneously stimulating the economy of Southside Virginia, filling a vacancy in our country’s energy needs, and reducing the United State’s dependency on foreign sources of energy.”

This is an economic opportunity of epic proportions if it is done right but there is still a lot of concern about the effects of transfering ore to geological formations that supply drinking water along with other potential issues.

The $$ impact on Va and Nc to a lesser extent will be huge. As long as a thorough mining study is performed by well vetted balanced and objective geo science experts who are unaffiliated with and have no personal or professional obligations to entities that may benefit from or be disadvantaged by their findings then let the good times roll. Nothing costs less per MW than nuke power. Hopefully there will be 200 more nuke plants than we have already that are up and running nationally in the next 2 decades.. if not then we have failed the next generation who will still be economic slaves to cheap oil and coal. And lets offer a percentage of mineral royalties to university based alternative energy education so the next generation can counter our addiction to imported energy.

Perhaps someone in the State government should consider contacting Honeywell about moving their conversion facility to Virginia.
