Glenn Nye, Scott Rigell & Kenny Golden to Debate Thursday
By | Monday, August 16th, 2010 | Politics

Scott Rigell’s team has announced today that the first (and possibly only?) debate featuring all three registered candidates in the 2nd District will be this Thursday at 7:00 PM at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach.

Kenny must be polling around 15% in accordance with Rigell campaign requirements for this kind of a debate.

Kudos to the Rigell team. He’ll do fine.

Good news indeed! Hopefully Golden will finally see the light and stand down.

Two real candidates and Kenny the egomaniac poser will be on the stage. You know, there are a thousand or more people that could be in Keny’s spot on the stage and they would all do fine at these events that pretend to be debates. The truth is, just like Kenny none of them would have a chance to win. It really doesn’t matter how well or poorly Golden does at the debate because he has no money and no grassroots operation that can compete with the party candidates. So why he is doing this? Because he can’t stand the obvious fact that the Beach GOP doesn’t like him and NEVER wanted him to be their Congressman. It’s spite, jealousy and blind rage all rolled into one. He’s pathetic and these do-gooder groups that event him to their events out of some sense of fairness are delusional because they are not giving the people of the district a real representation of what is at stake in this election. Kenny is probably at 2 percent in the polls. He should get to speak 2 percent of the time.

[...] First 2nd CD debate with all 3 candidates this Thursday. This is good news. The voters in the 2nd should get to hear all three candidates – and more than once. The LWV is sponsoring a debate in October and all three have been invited. So far, two have accepted. Guess who the holdout is? [...]

  12. VaBchRavensFan August 17, 2010 18:45 pm

Each voter should take an in-depth look at all 3 candidates in order to make an educated decision at the polls. Decisions should be based on proven leadership, experience and qualifications.

Kenny Golden served 31yrs of Naval Service, has 5000 flight hours, served 2 tours of duty in the Pentagon, and lead the largest Amphibious Task Force since the Korean War. He is certainly more than qualified to serve Virginians on Capitol Hill.

I feel that anyone who chooses not to debate this legitimate candidate is disrespecting Veterans and the Constitution. The truth of the matter is, Scott Rigell did not “man-up” until the last minute.

The bottom line is that everyone on the ballot has the right to an open debate. Any effort to avoid a face-to-face forum is simply cowardice and unbecoming of a leader.

  13. Jax August 17, 2010 20:27 pm

Ravens fan, the people already spoke when the decided not to back Kenny. He had his chance, and clearly didn’t win. Instead he packed up and left the party. I know all about his credentials, and know all the good the man has done. What he’s doing now though is just nonsense, and sooner or later he’ll understand that what he’s doing is a mistake. As for Nye, you have to actually show your face and talk with the people you represent. The guy is putting on a good show, one that is ultimately run by Nancy Pelosi. A vote for Nye is a vote for Pelosi.

  14. kingsmoothie August 17, 2010 20:58 pm

Oh, Kenny has 5000 flight hours! Why didn’t someone tell me this before? Clearly that makes him the best choice for Congressman.

  15. 2nd District Voter August 17, 2010 21:02 pm

Scott Rigell will rock this debate.

He has already been in a debate with Kenny Golden 4 times!!!!!!

    Scott will clean Nye’s clock!

You know, I haven’t actually seen Nye since he was running in ’08 – and he’s my Congressman? Where is Glen Nye????????? That is the question!

  16. Matt August 17, 2010 22:38 pm

I have not heard Rigell talk in quite some time just Jason Miyares. So this should be interesting on Thursday.

  17. Henry Ryto August 17, 2010 23:27 pm

    2nd District Voter,

If you look in the right places, you’ll find Glenn Nye.

The last two years Nye has handed out the awards at the annual Banquet for the CCO, Virginia Beach’s civic league federation. (Meyera used to do it, but Sessoms hasn’t.) Touching base with people active in their community is shrewd.

    VaBeachRavensFan,

I’m a native of Maryland who has lived in Virginia Beach nearly 18 years now. I’m a Ravens fan, too.

That said, your hyperbole on Golden is pathetic. While there’s an argument for voting Golden, your oversell makes even Brian Kirwin blush.

    THE BOTTOM LINE

This year taking back a district as Republican as VA-02 should have been easy.

First we got the rugby scrum nomination fight. Then Rigell having trouble rallying the base, especially with Golden in as an Independent. Now Jason Miyares ham-handing the debates matter. Instead of Scott Rigell being quoted in the free media about issues, we have Miyares on why Rigell won’t debate the issues. Miyares is doing at least as much damage to Rigell as Golden is.

As the old line goes, “We have met the enemy and it is us.”

  18. LittleDavid August 17, 2010 23:47 pm

    Henry Ryoto,

Thanks for giving Glenn Nye a fair shake.

Glenn is the candidate I support. He did more for veterans in his first four months in office then Thelma did in her entire four years in office. Are veterans going to depend on proven performance or hope the used car salesman (that would be Rigell) will represent them?

  19. James Hawkins August 18, 2010 07:45 am

I would think that ex-Sergeant Rigell of the United States Marine Corps Reserve would do an adequate job of representing veterans.

  20. Chris Meeropol August 18, 2010 07:51 am

You all want Kenny to drop out right? I’ll tell you exactly how to do it. Convince Kenny that Nye or Rigell are more qualified to handle the needs of the district and he will drop out immediately. Since I have never seen anyone even attempt to do that, I don’t think Kenny is going anywhere.

The biggest economic issues right now are JFCOM and those carriers. Rigell and Nye aren’t even close to Kenny in those two areas.

You all can say all you want, but the only thing driving Kenny is patriotism. He could have retired multiple times before his 31 years and became a wealthy man, but he didn’t like to be sitting on the sidelines while his country needed him.

Nye and Rigell are like two kids running for class president in high school. Kenny couldn’t deal with watching them fumble the most important issues this region has faced in decades. That is why he is running. If you want to call that ego or sour grapes then I call you un-american and totally out of touch with reality.

I say again, no one has made the argument Kenny is the worse candidate, no one has said Nye or Rigell have better records. The only thing I hear is that he has no chance. If you look back in history, that logic is why we have the problems we have today. You only waste your vote if you vote for the person you know isn’t qualified.

Kenny will mop the floor with Rigell and Nye tomorrow. If you had been to the 1 debate and 3 forums, you would know Rigell is as plastic as a kids toy and Kenny is the real deal. Watch for Rigell to be shaking in his boots like at the RPVB breakfast debate. I still have the footage, Rigell was shaking. At the Eastern Shore Debate, he was so nervous he had his pant leg tucked into his sock.

  21. James "turbo" Cohen August 18, 2010 08:54 am

With all due respect to the voters in this district who are concerned about the issues, this debate is about them having the opportunity to observe the candidates in an unintimidating setting. Most voters who are interested enough to attend know that Congress is failing them and it is their right to vet the candidates. I want to take a moment to thank all of them for attending.

  22. James Hawkins August 18, 2010 09:05 am

“If you look in the right places, you’ll find Glenn Nye.”

The comments I could make about that statement. However for months I have tried to “find” Glenn Nye. Go look at http://nye.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=55&sectiontree=23,55

I live 5 minutes from the Willow Oaks Farm Fresh. I was checking his site twice a week and still missed knowing about that visit. Yet THREE months later the info is still there. Why did he not give notice 3 months in advance.

Whenever I have called his office, his office staff has either been extremely rude or very condescending.

Last Thursday I drove over to the Rigell campaign office to pick up a few things. Everyone there was just as polite and nice as they could be.

Even though Mr Hoeft was too busy to speak to me, Mr Rigell found the time to chat with me and we even had a picture taken together.

I like Scott Rigell and I will be proud to vote for him on 11/02/2010.

  23. Politics23 August 18, 2010 10:08 am

No one is debating Mr. Golden’s honorable service to his country or qualifications. However, the fact remains that every single member of the House of Representatives is either a Democrat or Republican. The “Who is Kenny Golden” signs ironically reflect the fact that most Second District voters have little to no knowledge of Kenny. He already debated Scott Rigell four times and quit the race for the GOP nod after the most recent debate to run as an independent. He couldn’t obtain significant endorsements or donations in the primary and continues this inability today. Despite his presence on the ballot, the next Congressman from the 2nd will be either Republican Rigell or Democrat Nye. A vote for Kenny Golden or Glenn Nye, then, is tantamount to allowing Nancy Pelosi to continue serving as Speaker. There is only one candidate who will do what is necessary to set our country back on the right track and that man is Scott Rigell.

  24. Mike Barrett August 18, 2010 10:09 am

Again Chris, to criticize Nye for his handling of the carrier retention issue is to ignore the praise and thanks from Governor McDonnell for Nye’s work on this issue. To condemn Nye for JFCOM is to ignore the fact that the bulk of the impact is in Randy Forbes’ district and I see no condemnation of what Randy has done. Fact is, Nye has well served small businesses, active duty military and their families, retirees, and has well served us on the retention of the F-22s, the search for OLF capacity and positioning for the F-35s, and the competition of the Littoral Combat ships at either Norfolk or Little Creek. I have met with him frequently on community issues and have always found him to be helpful and attentive. No need for a change in this district.

  25. Reginald Brown August 18, 2010 12:38 pm

Glenn Nye has been a huge disappointment for those of us that lean left. Rigell unfortunately is another religious extremist and out of touch millionaire buying a seat in the house supposed to represent the people. Do we really need another millionaire for representation?

I think millionaires are pretty well represented considering 44% of congress fall into this category. Golden is refreshing for democracy even if it is a long shot and I have some major disagreements with him. I wish more pissed off people would run for office if they felt qualified.

Can anyone tell me where Rigell differs from George W. Bush?

  26. Johny G. August 18, 2010 13:12 pm

@Ron You are obviously an uneducated moron that arbitrarily posts anything that pops into your head. You should consider getting the facts right prior to your next posting. Your level of comprehension is embarrassing not only to the Congressional, but to the human race as well.
Kenny is certainly the most distinguished and experienced candidate in the 2nd district.
Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself Thursday night. Does your candidate have what it takes or does he plan to “buy” the election?

    From the Virginia Pilot Poll:

Should 2nd District independent candidate Kenny Golden be invited to debates with the Democratic and Republican candidates?

    Yes
    83% (577 votes)

    No
    16% (113 votes)

    Undecided
    1% (9 votes)

    Total votes: 699

    Mr. Cohen,
The numbers are a true and unbiased representation of what the PEOPLE want. Wait until the “who will you vote for” surveys begin. Bet you Kenny will still be on top!

  30. James "turbo" Cohen August 18, 2010 17:58 pm

Wouldn’t it be interesting to hold an informal poll at the end of tomorrow nights forum.

  31. Johnny B. August 18, 2010 18:52 pm

    Should anyone trust Scott Rigell?

    1) He donated $1,000 to Obama for America in March of 2008, during his primary race.

    2) His dealership received $444,500 from taxpayers through the Cash for Clunkers program

    3) He arranged for his son, Justus Scott Rigell, to receive preferential treatment, when he was charged and found guilty of a DWI 3/14/2009. Justus was only charged a $250 fine, and his operator license being suspended. He didn’t get a single day of jail time. The case can be found under the Virginia Beach General District Court website: http://epwsgdp1.courts.state.va.us/gdcourts/captchaVerification.do?landing=landing
    Case Number: GT09020673-00

In fact both of Scott Rigell’s sons, Justus and Edward, have been in and out of the Va Bch court system. Rich boys that continue to tear up the city because daddy continues to buy their way out of trouble. Many are questioning his ethics and family values.

  32. Chris Meeropol August 18, 2010 20:50 pm

I think the one thing we can all agree on is that Rigell’s family is off limits. Boys will be boys. Rigell is a man running for Congress, lets focus on his qualifications and what he wants to do for the district, not what his kids do.

  33. Tim J August 18, 2010 21:15 pm

Johnny, thanks for the link to that site… it’s a lot of fun!

Chris, fair ‘nuf about the family, but Scott has a couple of speeding boo-boos on his record and quite a few civil cases under Rigell Properties LLC in Chesapeake where he has been hauling the same guy into court for the past couple of years.

Kenny has a couple of dings with speeding in a school zone (under appeal) and an expired inspection.

Didn’t see anything for Glenn Nye in Va Beach, Norfolk or Chesapeake in Civil or Traffic/Criminal court.

  34. On the fence August 18, 2010 21:55 pm

Family issues: It is like cross-examination. If it is brought up in direct, it is fair game. Hence, if a candidate is going to use a picture on his/her web site of a family photo or expound on the accomplishments of members of the family, then the events of that family member are fair game. Besides, “passing off a boys will be boys” for DUI is pretty cavalier.

  35. Chris Meeropol August 18, 2010 22:34 pm

Maybe if his kids were still kids and not grown up already. Besides, why should we punish someone for hiring a good lawyer?

The point is that there is enough stuff to attack Rigell on without having to bring his family into it.

69% Say Americans are Becoming More Rude, Less Civilized

So much for a kinder, gentler America.

A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds that 69% of Americans think their fellow countrymen are becoming more rude and less civilized. Just 14% say they’re becoming kinder and gentler. Another 17% aren’t sure which way they’re headed.

Still, the percentage of adults who think Americans are getting ruder is down slightly from September 2009, when fully three-quarters (75%) of the population held that sentiment.

Many think the passage of time has changed our public manners for the worst. Sixty-two percent (62%) say Americans are more rude to sales personnel or people waiting on them than they were 10 years ago. Nineteen percent (19%) don’t believe that’s true. Nearly as many (18%) are not sure.

But then 57% say sales and service personnel are more rude to customers than they were 10 years ago, too. Thirty-two percent (32%) disagree, and another 11% are not sure.

Men are much more likely than women to have confronted someone over their rude behavior in public, though more women than men think sales and service personnel are more rude than they were a decade ago.

    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/index.php/public_content/lifestyle/general_lifestyle/august_2010/69_say_americans_are_becoming_more_rude_less_civilized

I have been asking people at work about this. So far I have had a 100% response in agreement.

Since I am a pharmacist, it is ALWAYS my fault when the insurance company says no.

And yes people are starting to have allergy problems now; try some loratadine 10 mg at bedtime, it might help.

  37. Bryan Stuart August 19, 2010 13:12 pm

Wow, dragging a man’s family into the public arena is one of the lowest things someone can do.

It also shows how desperate Nye and the Democrats are becoming during this campaign. I would to if Nancy Pelosi was the head of your party.

  38. James "turbo" Cohen August 19, 2010 13:36 pm

@Johnny B., +1 for Bryan on this issue.. Family members are off limits and should be irrelevant to online discussions on this or any public forum. That is a line that no candidate will likely cross on a public forum and it does not reflect well on anyone of us if we condone it.

Thank you in advance for asking the Bearing Drift moderators to allow you to edit your comments about the republican candidates family member.. I do not support Scotty for congress, but even I won’t go there. If BD allows you to edit your comments I would like to request that they delete this post in its entirety afterwards.

  39. reid S. August 19, 2010 13:39 pm

So typical of Washington politics of personal destruction. Pathetic that instead of talking about the issues and the wreck that our country is in right now they choose to talk about non-issues hoping to distract people. It’s not going to work.

And by the way “Johnny B”….Scott Rigell has one son, not two. You’re a fool.

  40. leighparadise August 19, 2010 13:50 pm

Rigell’s family has three generations of Marines. And Rigell has the military background and the business background to represent VA02 well. It’s time to send a proven job creator to Congress.

  41. Jax August 19, 2010 14:51 pm

This is typical Washington style politics of personnel destruction. It shows that the other side wants to change the subject from the economy. The most recent jobs #s came out to day and jobless claims went up to 500,000 people. The Democrats and Nye would rather talk about non-issues than talk about jobs.
So, at a time when our country is suffering, and Nye is failing, we’re going to start throwing out things about family? There’s just no reason to.

  42. James "turbo" Cohen August 19, 2010 16:18 pm

    Back to the OP..

Scott Rigell or his agent have lied once again.. and I quote:

Rigell campaign LIE #1 “We are disappointed that Congressman Nye has refused to debate Scott one on one, but we are very excited that Scott will finally be able to share the stage with the Democratic incumbent and have a spirited debate on the issues.”

Rigell campaign LIE #2 “NYE INVITED TO JOIN SCOTT RIGELL AT FOUR “WE THE PEOPLE” TOWN HALLS!”

“We encourage you to contact Congressman Nye at 757-326-6201 and ask him to join Scott at the “We The People” Town Halls and listen to his constituents.”

Well beam me up Scotty, actually that phone number is wrong. I called their manager at the real campaign office number 273-7217 which you would have listed if you had actually called the dems yourselves before hitting the send button of that misleading email of lies. Per the manager, the incumbent has agreed to a dozen, that is correct, a dozen (12) debates with all of 3 candidates on the ballot. I do not expect the gop challenger to come clean and say what he really means so I will do it for you. “I would not expect the democratic challenger to respond to that type of crap from the republican challenger” said Golden supporter Cohen.

Republican, Democrat and Independent voters and debate/forum organizers see right through the BS. Until You “Scotty” decide to face both challengers at the debates that organizers invite all of you to, YOU Scotty will be held to an elite special VIP standard, above the voter, the only one who keeps this weak candidate nonsense going.

How is it going up there big boy? Scotty, this is the 2nd district calling.. Earth to planet Scotty, earth to planet Scotty, do you read me?

  43. Jax August 19, 2010 22:33 pm

    Turbo…FAIL
Love that you drafted up that post and sent it out with all your might…the day of a scheduled debate with all three candidates. Well done! There is absolutely no need for anymore debates, Nye will get destroyed every time.
All your BS and sleuth work is completely irrelevant. Scott Rigell is going to win the election, and we’ll all move on to writing about someone else on this site.
Also, last I heard, Nye was a total clone on the center stage. He reminds me of Data from Star Trek. Maybe you’re on another planet with Mr. Nye. Just saying.

The debate tonight was great! So glad that I went, despite the heat in that auditorium. Scott Rigell was on fire! Someone told me that Glenn Nye would be tough to debate…what a joke! Nye came off as bland and hesitant…very unsure of himself and kept repeating the same tired lines. Rigell, on the other hand, really engaged the audience and received – by far – the most applause. His answers were clear and succinct and without hesitation. Anyone in the audience would clearly have the most confidence in Rigell after seeing that debate!!

  46. Matt August 19, 2010 23:30 pm

I went to tonight’s debate and came away thinking that Rigell is good at giving prepared remarks and that he constantly acts like he is giving a stump speech. I noticed that several times he never answered the questions and one time was called out by the moderator about it while both Kenny and Rep. Nye both were able to answer the questions in the allotted time.

Meanwhile I think that Kenny had a firm grasp of the issues and was able to explain his views and the issues effectively to the audience.

  47. Chris Meeropol August 20, 2010 00:06 am

Wavy 10 Story from tonight’s debate. Seems to me like the media is squarely behind Kenny on this one…

  48. kasimpson82 August 20, 2010 01:22 am

Seriously, Golden came off like my grandfather after a few beers. He rambled on and on and never made a point.

Rigell stood out because he has a backbone to challenge Congressmen Nye – and was alone in doing that. I like that Rigell stood up and challenged Nye.

I loved when Rigell talked about the thing he got in the mail – I PAID FOR THAT. At least what I get from Rigell he pays for. And Golden is broke so no one pays for that one, score one for the environment.

  49. Chris Meeropol August 20, 2010 07:45 am

Kenny is more like the grandfather with 31 years of Navy experience. What you call rambling, I call giving a detailed answer. Rigell is the one who strayed off topic at every turn and had to be asked by the moderator to actually answer the question.

Kenny challenged Nye as well, except he did it with class, unlike Rigell who seemed like a plastic toy soldier following orders.

Rigell did do well, but he seemed scripted and programed. There was a good program running, but how many people outside his paid army thought that way?

I also witnessed Melody Scalley and another Rigell staffer messing with the microphone settings during the start of the debate. Everyone remember Kenny’s microphone mysteriously cutting in and out while he gave his answers? Yeah, that was no accident, just another Rigell ploy to control every angle of the debate. I’ve spent my fair share of time in front of a switchboard and what I saw was pure malicious intent, not incompetence.

  50. Brian Kirwin August 20, 2010 09:16 am

Rigell sounds like he had a darn good gameplan here. Watching the video, Scott delivered on what matters to voters, and had the sound bites ready for tv.

Kenny is a great speaker, but debates are won 8 seconds at a time. He didn’t do well in this forum, in my opinion.

Nye was lost. His whole message was “I agree with these guys. Why throw me out?” It’s a losing strategy designed to keep voters home.

  51. John Hurley August 20, 2010 14:36 pm

I found very little disagreement among the three. They’re all pro-war. They’re all for keeping those carriers here. They’re all for “sealing” the border.

I did like Rigell’s lip service about the free market. I did like that an independent is running. I did like that Kenny is for the FairTax. I did like that Rigell would vote present when Congress votes on stupid things like congratulating football teams, but I’d rather Congress vote on football teams than vote on “important” things because when they vote on “important” things, they always reduce our liberty.

I did the math and I agree with 53% of Nye’s votes. If Rigell gets in there and votes like the best Republican (Paul Broun), I’d agree with him 85%. I don’t know if it’s worth coming out to vote for that extra 32%. That’s what they did back in the 1800s. People were very loyal to their ideology and party. If their candidate was too watered-down, voters would just stay home.

Well, on to the next debate. But, I thought.. wait a minute, uh.. did someone say YES before they said NO again?

Former ODU college GOP chair Tyler Spires was supportive of having all three candidates debate. Commendable. Now, there appears to be a conflict of interest for the new ODU College Republicans.. the student chair Chris D’Ambra who conveniently works for Rigell’s campaign still seems to be doing whatever Jason tells him to do. Chris has been asked several times by the college dems to share debate organizing responsibilities with them and host a debate but now apparently Jason Miyares has spoken and they will not debate if Kenny Golden is invited. Chris, show some spine son.

Sad to learn that the ODU college republicans are cowtowing to a gop campaign manager’s heavy handed demands and like his candidate, quitting on yet another debate. Kenny and Glenn will debate as planned and the empty seat with Scotty’s name just might be on display.
