Mel Martinez endorses Loyola
By | Thursday, January 14th, 2010 | Politics

Former Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Florida) has endorsed Ben Loyola for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District. According to a Loyola release:

“His conservative credentials are without flaw and I hope the voters of Virginia’s Second District send him to Congress,” said Senator Martinez in supporting Loyola in the highly charged and competitive primary to challenge Democrat Glenn Nye.

“Ben Loyola’s life story is an inspiration and a great example of the American Dream. Fleeing the tyranny of communist Cuba, Ben came to America’s shores, served his country in uniform and became a successful businessman.”

Loyola is proud of the support from a leader who has served the Republican Party and our country in so many ways.

“Senator Martinez’s endorsement of me in this race is another example of how competitive this nomination contest will be,” said Loyola. “His 100% pro-life rating, his strong opposition to high taxes and his willingness to be an independent leader are things that we both share.”

Loyola was recently endorsed by another Florida congressman, Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

Is Loyola running for Congress in Miami or Virginia?

  2. integrityinpolitics January 14, 2010 17:32 pm

With all these Florida endorsements, it seems to me that Ben Loyola is running in the wrong state. It might be good to work in some local 2nd district Virginia endorsements as well.

Ben, congratulations on this national endorsement and from your press release, you say he is a recent Chairman of the Republican Committee as well as having served in Pres. George Bush’s cabinet. I hope you and Scott Taylor get many more of these as well as local endorsements because they show that you not only have local but also national support. Good Job!

No doubt about it. With this endorsement, Ben has the Republican Cuban American voters in the Second District sown up. Now the other 99.99999999% of the GOP is up for grabs. Mel Martinez, who quit his seat in the Senate, seriously? Once again, out of town endorsements don’t matter.

  5. Tim J January 14, 2010 18:38 pm

Ron, do you and the Rigell campaign have a problem with Cuban-Americans or other Hispanics?

  6. JR Hoeft January 14, 2010 19:20 pm

I wouldn’t totally dismiss the endorsements. Just today Cantor was talking about getting more ethnic in the GOP. Certainly it’s wise to get the Hispanic community involved and supportive of any campaign…even in Virginia.

Tim J – No. Of course not. It’s just that Ben has received several endorsements from the Cuban American members of Congress, which is fine. But as a practical matter – through a political science lens, not a racial one – this endorsements have no impact. Do you believe they do? BTW – I am not aligned with any candidate. It’s just amusing to watch this endorsement dance when I know for sure that no one in the non-activist portion of the party cares one bit about these endorsements.

RE: JR’s comments about the GOP searching for more ethnic candidates, I agree with Cantor 10000%. We must. But you can’t put a round peg in a square hole. This isn’t South Florida. Ben has an awesome story, he is an incredible Patriot and I think he would be a solid member of Congress, but he has no base – NONE. I’m not talking about 20-50 people, I’m talking about thousands of people that he can turn into missionaries for his cause. Only Rigell has that. People underestimate him at their peril. His nomination is inevitable. Do you have any idea how many cars he has sold, any idea how many people his charitable gifts have assisted. The dude is as solid as it gets in the community. He’s going to win………

No Ron of mexico, you don’t have a candidate in this race, what a joke. Rigell has been up to DC more than any of these candidates even with Thelma. Has he come back with any sitting Congressmen endorsements? What do you think she brought him up there for? How many elected local or national does this guy have endorsements from that he hasn’t donated to? . Why have the politicians who he hasn’t donated to gotten on his band wagon? He is not the guy, period. Cars sold? Please, I’m sure I’m gonna send the guy who sold me a car to lead my country. His and his supporters arrogance in how all of you believe he has this wrapped up is why you will loose.

Thanks Ron for your candor and you certainly have a right to your opinions. We would like to invite you to the Virginia 10th Amendment Revolution on Monday, 18 Jan. where the Virginia Tea Party is going to rally around 10th Amendment legislation supporting HB10 and HB69. We had put out some questions about this with the Rigell, Taylor, Golden and Loyola campaigns and the Loyola campaign is the only one who has responded with concrete ideas and support. I imagine the other campaigns will eventually get on the band wagon, but right now, Ben is ahead of the curve. We are also watching the upcoming debates very closely.

We just got word that Speaker Bill Howell, who has never in the history of serving as Speaker co-sponsored a bill, has asked to be co-sponsor of the HB10, the 10th amendment Health Care Reform Bill.

    Thanks Ron for your candor?

How about thanks Ron for making up a name?

  12. Tim J January 15, 2010 10:29 am

Oh, My!! Ron, you aren’t who you say you are?

  13. Amber January 15, 2010 13:56 pm

Ron Mexico was the name that Michael Vick used when he had a tryst with a woman in Mexico… he gave her a STD and was then sued by the woman.

  14. Tim J January 15, 2010 16:11 pm

Amber… Wow! I hope those types of supporters of the Rigell campaign have their shots up to date and they pass out gloves to the unsuspecting before their candidate shakes hands.

  15. Saul Simmons January 16, 2010 08:24 am

I would take local endorsements from local elected officials over an endorsement from a Washington insider who lives 800 miles away in Florida anyday. Didn’t Martinez quite his Senate seat? Has he ever even visited Va Beach or the Eastern Shore?

Running for Congress in the wrong state is right.

  16. Ron Mexico January 16, 2010 09:49 am

Brian, don’t you mean thanks for making up a cool name…

Actually, Ron Mexico is the name Vick used at the Tech health center when he needed to be treated for an STD. He didn’t want to use his real name for obvious reasons. It has nothing to do with a tryst in Mexico itself. Geez, people, lighten up. Good grief…

BTW – go back and read what I wrote about Ben. He is a good guy.
