On the Ground Report from the 37th District
By Krystle Weeks | Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 | PoliticsCentreville, Va.–The phone calls and door knocking is all done in the 37th State Senate District, and now, volunteers are gathered at their respective victory parties to celebrate.
Reports from throughout the day have been favorable for the Republicans in the 37th District. A Republican official told me that turnout has been particularly higher in their precincts and lower in the Democrat precincts.
Right now, I am updating this post from Steve Hunt’s victory party and will keep you posted throughout the evening.

Is the State Board of Elections not keeping up with this race? I don’t see any results on their site.
Keep up with this live-blog from Krystle, but I posted the returns as they should be coming in from Fairfax Cty and Virginia Beach here:
Election Returns for the 8th and 37th
What’s the mood up there like, Krystle? Also, what’s the electoral difference between the Braddock, Springfield, and Sully precincts?
I have no idea what is going on with the State Board of Elections site. Check fairfaxcounty.gov for more details.
Looks like McWaters wins in a landslide. Congrats, Sen. McWaters!!!!
Update: Marsden is ahead by 5% (18 out of 40 precincts). Sorry about the previous report.

Right now, Hunt is down by 5 points. The mood seems upbeat here despite the deficit.
With 70 percent of the precincts reporting, Dave Marsden is ahead by five percentage points.
Some notables are here this evening:
Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli
Keith Fimian
Pat Herrity is also here.
Breaking News coming from JR soon
Looks like Marsden has won. Hunt will concede defeat by about 500 votes. Senate Democratic majority now 22-18.
Update: Recent results indicate Steve Hunt is down by two percentage points. Mood is still upbeat.
Marsden is now 300 votes ahead! This could be a recount if it is close enough.
Unless it was paper ballots if the Fairfax GOP or Hunt asks for a recount they’ll look almost as bad as Bobby Mathieson. And he lost by 16 votes. It’d be a shame to see the award-winning City Committee lose their dignity by asking for a recount (assuming it’s greater than 50 votes and not using paper ballots)
True. You make a valid point, D.J.
A small update: Marsden did well in Burke and Centreville area precincts. Hunt did well in Springfield. All votes are in and we are down 300 votes. Fairfax County could order a recount.
Hunt is delivering his remarks. Hunt is thanking volunteers for their hard work over the past six weeks. Hunt thanked his wife. Hunt thanked Attorney General-elect, Lieutenant Governor Bolling, Governor-elect, RPV, and FCRC for their assistance. Hunt mentioned that he is awaiting the results from the canvass before making any remarks regarding concession. If it gets within 246 votes, then there could be a recount.
Hunt mentioned that Marsden did well with absentee balloting.
