is that like a convention, or is it something else.
Honestly, I’ve never quite gotten the canvass concept. I think it’s something of a cross between a convention and an open primary. In political campaigning, it’s, well, campaigning door-to-door and going out for support. Stay tuned…we’ll be getting more info between now and then – guaranteed.
I hope someone can clear up my confusion. The way I read the RPV Party Plan, it is the 2nd Congressional District Committee that determines the method of nomination (Article IV, Section D(1)(a)). How is it that the Congressional District Chairmen are making this decision?
What is wrong with just letting us vote?
A party canvass (not the same as a convention) is what is commonly referred to as a “firehouse primary.” It is what was held in the 37th Senate District on Tuesday and what will be held in the 8th Senate District on Saturday. In essence, it is a party-run primary, with the party selecting the date, times, and voting locations.
Interestingly, I see that the RPV Party Plan was just amended on November 7 to permit the use of the party canvass to nominate candidates for statewide and Congressional office (previously only primaries and conventions were permitted). Another November 7 amendment requires at least one polling location in each unit.
Excellent….thanks for the great explanation David!
It would be nice if the Party would openly communicate this information to the people who support it.
David’s correct. It’s the same process that his been used to pick State Senate Republican nominees recently.
David’s completely right, except… a firehouse primary is ONE location, and a canvass is multiple. Same concept, just different number of places. The 8th is actually a canvass.
Mary, a firehouse primary can be either one location or multiple locations. There is no official difference between the two terms, though I suppose unofficially people could create a distinction.
Overall, though, this is a disappointing decision. If there is going to be a GOP wave in 2010, it’s not just going to be a riled up Republican base, it’s also going to be made of Independents and infrequent voters who have decided to get involved in politics and made a decision to vote Republican. Excluding them from the process doesn’t allow us to build up the party and move forward in strength, rather than just swing from cyclical highs and lows.
Personally I dislike the idea of a canvas or a primary until VA gets its act together on party registration. I think that conventions are the only way to be sure that a candidate truly reflects the party he is suppose to represent. As for this meaning independents can’t be involved, last I checked there is no party registration in VA, which means, if you meet the criteria to be a delegate, and sign whatever agreements are required, most of the time (unless challenged) there is nothing stopping you from being a delegate.
