Election Day Open Thread
By | Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 | Politics

Well, it is finally ballot-casting time here in the Old Dominion. For us political junkies, today is like Christmas morning. This time around we are hoping it is the Democrats who will be ending up with coal in their stockings.

Visit here throughout the day to tell us what you are hearing from around the Commonwealth, make predictions, and get in on the political chatter.

Also, don’t forget to go out and cast your votes. The polls will be open until 7:00 PM and then the counting, and hopefully the celebration, will begin.

Early morning commuter turnout looks very low in Louisa. Dems have no one working the polls and have put up no signs.

I was working Swans Creek precinct in Prince William County this morning. VERY light turnout. Last year at 5 AM, an hour before the polls opened, there were hundreds waiting in line. This morning, there were 5 of us who voted at 6 AM.

I got there about 5:30 AM and put up signs for the GOP statewide ticket, separate Bill Bolling signs and Rafael Lopez for Delegate signs. Just after 6, Luke Torian’s crew showed up and put up a bunch of signs for him, but no one else! They’re taking their cue from Obama and throwing Deeds / Wagner / Shannon under the bus and trying to save Torian. I’d say that the traditional GOP voters in the precinct plus Hispanic voters will counterweight the Torian voters. And this precinct went HUGE for Obama / Warner / Bill Day last year!

I was in Lyon Park, Arlington from 5:45-9:30 and there were about 350 people who voted thus far

Republican volunteers (at least in Chester) are having the ‘we already won, so let’s just bury the hatchet now’ attitude. What I saw last year, which was an uneasiness between McCain and Obama volunteers at the polls, has now been replaced with handshakes, ‘good luck tonight’s and mutual good will.

I have a strong feeling that the victory for Bob McDonnell tonight will be a lot less divisive than the victory for Barack Obama was last year. Mostly because Democrats are already trying to “learn to love” McDonnell as opposed to Republicans being blind-sighted (I’m not sure how though) by the Obama win.

When I went to vote around noon, there had already been over 500 people through. May not seem like a lot for a VA Beach precinct, but considering it’s a non-federal year, it’s not bad! And the sweet ladies working the precinct agreed with me.
