Conservative Costume
By | Saturday, October 31st, 2009 | Catch-All

Halloween is one of my favorite celebrations because it allows folks to be creative and be someone else for one day in the year. But what about those politicians who pretend to be conservatives and still call themselves Republicans? Who would you give the best costume award to? Olympia Snowe? Lindsay Graham? My choice, Mike Huckabee.

Clearly Dede Scozzafava wins this prize.

    Whole heartedly concur JR

Not a fan of the Huckabee bashing, and to compare him to Olympia Snowe? Never.

JR, Dede although clearly not a conservative at least knows when to be a team player and is willing to listen to what others think and tell her, unlike the other folks on your list. Not a fan of hers, just willing to give her newly won respect.

Well here’s the thing. Huckabee is cool and all and I’d love him as my pastor but really he’s a southern version of a Rockefeller Republican and at the end of the day those kind of Republican’s never win.

And yes. Good for Dede for not being completely deaf to the conservative tidal wave that is coming on Tuesday.

It’s funny to see Conservatives talk about how the Republican Party should be for only Conservatives. Imagine if the Democrats did the same thing except make it only for liberals. Wouldn’t we have a giant tidal wave of Indies and 3rd Parties in every election making any 1 party leading with a decisive voice impossible? Ahh, god ‘ol parliamentary stalemate, except in US!

Huckabee a Rockefeller Republican? Don’t make me laugh. That is ridiculous.

Many very respected conservatives were so used to having a lack of choices throughout 2008, that when Huckabee burst onto the scene they went into fire mode. This was sadly a case of friendly fire.

Being Religious Right myself and having voted for Huckabee in the Virginia Republican Presidential Primary, a lecture for you. While the Religious Right can get worked up on moral fabric of society issues, most of us are economic moderates. Given how wedded we are to our issues, we don’t like to split our tickets.

However, it’s attacks like this blog post that can drive us to vote Democrat. We’d rather not, as the Democratic Party platform is devoid of our core issues.

    Henry,

I wouldn’t say that most of us are economic moderates, as a Liberty student I have heard my Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. as well as my “Religious Right” professor speak negatively of the Federal Reserve.

I think that there is a real precedent for economic conservatism among social conservatives. The Bible does speak of economic issues and speaks to the concepts of hard work and God given land ownership. There is also Biblical precedent for the government staying out of church affairs. A perfect example is a king in the Old Testament who disobeyed God by trying to do the priest’s job; he was stricken with leoparasy. So the Bible speaks to religious liberty issues as well.

With that lengthy statement, I will conclude by saying that Huckabee was no economic moderate; he supports the FairTax. He worked hard to cut taxes, after he had built the necessary coalition to do so. Regardless of what one may think of him; an economic moderate he is not.

I’m first and foremost an evangelical social conservative but I also stand for separation of state and economy. I believe in doing good, but with my own money, The government has no business providing a “Safety Net” Give them paychecks not unemployment checks as Bob McDonnell would say.

Count me in with a dissenting view on Huckabee. Most allegations about him not being conservative enough or wanting a right-leaning nanny state are gross distortions of his record. I believe he is the best communicator the conservative movement has. He treats people with respect, which is disarming to those who have opposing views–I’ve seen people who disagree with him vehemently lay down their defensive arms long enough to at least give him a hearing. And if we are interested in convincing the mushy middle that conservatism works, we have to get them to take their fingers out of their ears long enough to hear the reasons why. Huckabee is conservative, but he’s not angry about it; since he’s not shouting, rhetorically speaking, people listen. So, enough already with what Steven Osborne said above, friendly fire.

perhaps Huckabee should learn from Steven Osborne about friendly fire. calling the libertarians the real threat to the GOP, promoting a country-wide smoking ban, a continued interventional foreign policy, increasing benefits to illegal aliens, etc., Huckabee would consistently use the govt powers to control our lives.

why is it that so many Republicans think that being “conservative” socially means more government involvement and being “conservative” fiscally means less government? perhaps social conservatives who think banning gay marriage will “save the sanctity of marriage” should consider getting the government out of marriage contracts altogether to protect the institution of marriage. that would be the true conservative position to take

George Bush has to be the phoniest conservative of all time! Over and over again he touted himself as a conservative, and yet he spent like Bill Clinton and tried to nation build like LBJ and tax like Ronald Reagan. He threw out lending standards so he could boast of high homeownership rates among Hispanics, even thougbh many were uncreditworthy and / or in the country illegally. W was a disaster.

completely agree with you Macro J. and to think I almost voted for him!
