FOP To Endorse GOP Ticket Tomorrow?
By | Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 | Politics

Media advisories are flying that the GOP ticket is having a press conference to announce a big endorsement tomorrow morning.  Virginia Virtucon is reporting that this endorsement will be from the Fraternal Order of Police.  The FoP endorsed Bob McDonnell over Creigh Deeds for Attorney General in 2005 but endorsed Mark Warner for Senate last year against Jim Gilmore.

Whoever it is, the announcement will take place tomorrow morning at 9AM
in the House Briefing Room in the General Assembly.

No question marks needed, this was leaked inadvertently by a campaign staffer on Monday, received confirmation on Monday as well…

In fact, Bob will be holding a FOP Rally in Virginia Beach tomorrow at 4 PM

So, Bob’s been endorsed by the business community, the NRA, and now public safety?

And Deeds is running around shouting “thesis”!

I guess we know who’s serious about this race and moving forward and who’s stuck in time.

FYI: THE FOP is a social organization not “public safety”. They do not represent employees or labor. They are a social club with a bar and dance floor. Even the cops & firefighter’s unions hold parties in their club…

This is a simple attempt to give the appearance that “public safety” is backing Bobby McD. The funny part is that some folks from up north believe the shame… This is a sheriff Stollie/Paul Lanteigne run organization so this isn’t a real surprise or representative of Public Safety organizations in general. But they do have a nice bar with cheap drinks!!!!

The Fraternal Order of Police has once again lost a lot of credibility in their endorsement of this statewide ticket. They note that they support collective bargaining for public safety personnel but they endorsed a ticket that has made any issue relating to labor Public Enemy #1 this election cycle. This unlike organizations like the Fairfax Coalition of Police and Fairfax Deputy Sheriff’s Coalition they do not look at the political party when doing their endorsements but rather their narrow criteria for endorsing candidates. Sadly, Ken Cuccinelli realized that when these organizations endorsed Steve Shannon over him this election cycle after supporting him in 2007 in his reelection bid for State Senate. Ken noted in his video to the FOP that he supports law enforcement rights and even collective bargaining but Fairfax Police and Deputies still endorsed Shannon due to his experience as a prosecutor and working in the trenches with them when he was an assistant commonwealth attorney in Fairfax.

I have no doubt that when members voted on this endorsement they weren’t really looking at the individual candidates but rather how they feel towards the national party right now which is disappointing but not surprising giving the endorsement history of the FOP.
