Happy Union Day
By | Monday, September 7th, 2009 | Policy

Let’s not fool ourselves in thinking that Labor Day was created as anything but a sop to Labor Unions from a Democrat President that had just broken a strike and needed to kiss some major union butt.

Labor Day was created to celebrate “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations.” An actual historical debate has gone for years over who really pushed for Labor Day, the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, the American Federation of Labor or International Association of Machinists.

6 days prior to making “Labor Day” a national holiday, President Grover Cleveland sent federal troops to break a railroad strike. Major sops required.

So, pat a union worker on the back today! The rest of us who labor without Labor must not count, I guess.

Brian Kirwin

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Brian Kirwin is a political consultant and public relations strategist in Virginia Beach with a lightning-rod flair. Brian also serves on the VB Arts & Humanities Commission and frequently appears on Hampton Roads theatrical stages, if only to prove that all actors aren’t liberals. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

You should try to enjoy your weekends also. The unions also successfully pushed those so employers didn’t force workers to the breaking point. Child labor laws and others laws that help everyday nonunion members also came from union political activity. While not as dominate as in past decades, unions still have a place in America and the benefits are enjoyed by millions of nonunion members.

Lets remember only about 4% of workers are in Virginia unions today. They are easy targets when you need them but very helpful when they endorse your candidates!

Take care. Happy Labor Day 2009!

Weekends? You have weekends off? I don’t think I’ve ever had a job where I had weekends off.

Sorry, Bill. But the political activity of Unions isn’t exactly seen by most people as one of their better points.
