Democrat Bell could lose job
By Brian Kirwin | Friday, September 4th, 2009 | PolicyBearing Drift reported that Police Capt. John L. Bell Jr., Democrat candidate for Sheriff in Virginia Beach, was being investigated. Turns out, he’s got trouble.
auditors found “many” political campaign-related items on Bell’s (city) computer. The captain’s secretary also did some typing and copying for Bell’s campaign and used the office fax to send political documents.(Virginian-Pilot)
The article further states that such actions are prohibited by the City Code and carry “a maximum penalty of dismissal.”
Let’s see what Democrats call on Bell to do. I wonder if former Police officer Del. Mathieson will issue a statement. I wonder if the press releases will fly from the statewide Democrat candidates?

If you are a Police Officer running for Sherriff wouldn’t you think to be extra careful with your actions. Why give your opponennet any political ammo? Nice scoop!
While the investigation is “on going” they might want to check on the city computers of many of the 11 or so city council members. I’ll bet those “city employees have emails and other political items on their city computers also. I’m not saying it is right, but I presonally know of many political activities that took place in city buildings with current and past council members and even the sheriff. I remember folks passing around the signeture sheets to put council members on the ballot many times being done at city council meetings. And for those who are not up on city policy: volunteers and city council members ARE city employees by policy and are held to the same standard.
Seems like a scare tactic and an attempt to foce Bell out of the race.
Notice ya conveniently slipped by the “Mayor Holley” way of getting staffers to do your non-work-related work.
Huh? Just saying this investigation is a witch hunt. I can provide lots of info should Lyndon want to conduct a full investigation. Or maybe we’ll just skim the surface and ignore what other folks do with their office staffs…
You have a phone, Bill. Call the hotline. Lyndon has to investigate every complaint. That’s part of his job. Are you implying that he should’ve not investigated this one complaint?
It’s not if Lyndon “wants” to investigate. It’s if someone calls.
So who’s the accuser, Stolle?
I couldn’t find out.
I believe he has to investigate every one he is handed. I’m not find fault with Lyndon as that is his job. It is standard practice in many political circles in VB to use city staff, equipment and systems to support or fight political issues. I’ve seem it many times.
And it isn’t my job to report the current political activities of others as I’ve already reported the things I’ve witnessed. I don’t have a dog in the fight but it seems the Bell investigation/report is nothing more than a political witch hunt because he has upset the political wagon of some folks. I believe Ken is an easy winner but it seems some folks are scared to let the race playout.
Just my opinion…
