Kumbaya, save the planet and plastic bags
By | Friday, August 7th, 2009 | Policy

The Virginian-Pilot amazes me again. Today’s editorial calls on government to ban plastic bags. Recycling isn’t good enough for Woodstockers. BAN!

The trip is complete. The “make love not war,” “save the trees,” “tax the rich, feed the poor, ’til there are no rich no more” 60′s throwbacks at the Pilot have driven me to offer equal time space against their 2009 pitch to ban plastic bags.

About the author

Brian Kirwin

The right wants to jeer him. The left wants to censor him. Moderates usually want both. Brian Kirwin is a political consultant and public relations strategist in Virginia Beach with a lightning-rod flair. Brian also serves on the VB Arts & Humanities Commission and frequently appears on Hampton Roads theatrical stages, if only to prove that all actors aren’t liberals. Kirwin’s columns stir up debate and hit the political scene with no punches pulled.

Back in 2007, the Virginia Association of Counties was going around to different jurisdictions getting them to pass resolutions asking the General Assembly to ban the bags outright.

It ended up on the Caroline County Board of Supervisor’s consent agenda until one citizen questioned a couple of Board members about the resolution and they pulled it and refused to pass it asking, ‘Why are we even considering this?’.
