Brownlee’s position on abortion: Does it include allowing it for rape and incest?
By JR Hoeft | Friday, March 20th, 2009 | PoliticsLast July, I had the chance to interview John Brownlee and he had this position on abortion. At the time, his position appeared pretty clear:
A few days later, after Shaun Kenney criticized Brownlee on the life issue, in a telephone interview with Brownlee he responded to the criticism by stating:
“We both believe that life begins at conception and that abortion should be illegal unless it is to protect the life of the mother or in cases of rape or incest,” said Brownlee.
Then, recently, in the Roanoke AG debate, a source produced and sent me this video, based on the above quote:
You’ll notice that in the original podcast, Brownlee does not mention rape or incest, but in the quote he does. Therefore, is the Brownlee position consistent and I’m just a bad reporter? Or, as this quote has not been challenged by Brownlee, and it’s been there since last July, is “in cases of rape or incest” also his position on life?

I don’t understand the sizable support behind Brownlee. I’m completely unflattered by the man. There is nothing new, exciting, prominent, nor promising about him.
Chris: Maybe it has something to do with his 7 years as United States Attorney, status as an Army Ranger, clerkship with a federal judge, 4 year term as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, great family, great schools, ROTC Scholarship winner, and 3-year varsity football player in college. On the other hand, you are probably right — nothing prominent or promising about that guy. I can’t believe he would get one vote. (P.S.: Brownlee is so going to win the nomination!)
My question is not whether he believes in exceptions for rape or incest. My only question is where does his opponent stand on the issue of abortion? Such talk about exceptions for this or that are canards. Only a very small number of abortions are attributed to such cases and to make it appear like a large issue is more an indicator of the lack of perspective on the part of the accuser. I want to end legal abortion period. It is an affront to humanity and the barbarism of it is not fitting of a country as great and as generous as America.
BTW: I’ve not decided who I will support for the nomination but I’m leaning towards Cuccinelli but I just dislike this nitpicking over abortion. We look stupid doing this. Every poll shows most people want Abortion to be legally restricted and if we’d stop giving our opponents a toe hold claw back on we’d have long ago overturned Roe v Wade.
To me the larger question is how and why his position has shifted so quickly during the course of the campaign. What other shifts should we be worried about should he win the nomination?
Jason, all of that makes him just seem like another politician to me. Honorable, no doubt, but still nothing that I think will bring back Republicans in Virginia.
I saw Brownlee Saturday in my hometown Prince George. Maybe it’s just because I’m young but I have a pesky distaste for politicians who seem to have zero personality. Wait, that’s all of them…
Well, you get my point. Some are worse than the others.
And I’ll take that bet about the nomination
“John Brownlee believes life begins at conception and that all innocent human life should be respected and protected.”
That’s from Brownlee’s website. All means all, doesn’t it?
Brian – So he has three positions?
