Turn on your lights tonight
By | Saturday, March 29th, 2008 | Catch-All

Tonight is “Earth Hour” from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The organizers ask for everyone to turn out their lights for this hour. However, there is an alternative. Below the Beltway has the details.

    C’mon Jim, I thought you were an environmentalist? How can you be encouraging this. Your belief in the truth of global warming aside, burning fossil fuels to make a political point (and concurrently enriching the Middle East and by default Al Qaeda) just doesn’t make sesne.

    Neither does a symbolic gesture to help market the World Wildlife fund. But we can take it a step further. Starting at 8 PM:

    All Hollywood stars should abstain from cocaine for one hour.

    All escorts services should close for one hour.

    All murderers should delay any killings for one hour.

    All drug pushers should refrain from selling any drugs for one hour.

    All smokers should quit smoking for an hour.

    Just think….by 9 pm, we’ll have no more smoking, no more drugs, no more murder and we’ll have ended our dependence on foreign oil!

    Liberalism = stupidity.

    Right now, I’m watching my lovely former bride’s dogs. I think I may have to turn on every light in both houses for this particular hour.

    I will make sure all my lights are on, washing machine is running, air conditioner is on, dryer is on, dish washer is running and all my computers are up and running with their screens on.

    Amazing how dumb these responses are, and yet BK has the audacity to accuse liberals of being stupid?

    Your oil is paying for the bullets that are killing Americans in Iraq.

    Neoconservatism = idiotic and unpatriotic.

    On the bright side, I’ll enjoying thinking of a higher bill for any moron who does waste electricity tonight. Thanks for putting a smile on my face!

    I leave symbolism to the symbol-minded like Ragnar

    Give it up Ragnar; there is no intelligent life here.

    Oh, c’mon AIAW. It’s completely a joke.

    The symbolism of turning your lights out for one hour is just dumb. We need energy reform, Detroit to step up to the plate and design some real fuel efficient vehicles, a more open-mind to alternative fuels, a willingness to use those resources we possess in the U.S., a willingness to use wind farms and nuclear power, etc.

    Look, everyone turning their lights out for one hour is going to make everyone feel good and like they’re doing something. How about really doing something and demand from your legislators that we drill in ANWAR, Florida, and off the coast of Virginia? How about demand the use of bio-fuels? How about putting Detroit on notice and buying fuel efficient vehicles?

    Only then will we get real change.

    AIAW – JR should be excluded from your pronouncement – to Jim, this was a joke, the problem however is with others who really think this is a great way to stick it to … (who)?

    Jim – drilling isn’t the answer, the only folks that will benefit is the oil companies, each site will provide far too little oil to change our over-all consumption. Moreover, only some bio-fuels are worthwile (ethanol from corn is NOT one of them, it’s almost a 1 for 1 in energy costs to produce compared with what you receive in return. Sugar cane however…) You’re right on with the rest of your post.

    Well, darn.. TPad and WPress are arguing again, and my trackback didn’t go thru… Jim, I’ve got the perfect song for tonight

    *snicker*

    algae too, Ragnar.

    Ok, it was a joke on your part Jim. But what about the people who actually put every light on in their house because they don’t get irony?

    But the most ironic part is that no actual liberal seemed to know about this. I certainly didn’t. Nothing was mentioned on Raising Kaine or VB Dems or the other progressive blogs that have a pro-environmentalist slant.

    I have a feeling if there is a joke, you guys are the butt of it.

  13. Ragnar March 29, 2008 23:09 pm

    AIAW -

    That’s the sad bit, there were obviously plenty of folks (just look up) who don’t get the irony. I also agree on the publicity, I think it was a far bigger deal to the neocons to give them an excuse to make some pronouncements about liberals, than it was in the liberal community.

    Hoooeeee! I was all set to do that hour thingy, just to show them A-rabs they can’t push America around. Well I figured I’d take a little nap after the truck race, so’s I’d be wide awake to do my part. Wouldn’t ya’ll know I slept right through, and the dang kids left all the lights on. I am so disappo.., I say disappointed, that I let my country down. To make amends, I have no choice but to fly my William and Mary flag up side down in shame.

  15. The Squeaky Wheel March 30, 2008 14:00 pm

    I had to leave my lights on so I could see the spray of all of my aresol cans that I was spraying.
