Remembering Rockbridge County Del. Ronnie Campbell (1954-2022), Flags at Half-Staff
The Virginia General Assembly lost House of Delegates member Ronnie Campbell (R, HOD-24) Tuesday morning. He passed away after fighting cancer the past year.
U.S. and Virginia flags will fly at half-staff through Wednesday at sunset in honor of Del. Campbell, as proclaimed by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who issued the following statement:
“Suzanne and I are saddened to learn of Delegate Campbell’s passing,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Ronnie served the Commonwealth he loved in so many ways: as a State Trooper for over two decades, on the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors and School Board, and in the House of Delegates. He cared deeply about his community, the Commonwealth, law enforcement, and above all his wife, Ellen, and their family. Suzanne and I are praying for the entire Campbell family during this difficult time.”
Republican Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Todd Gilbert shared this:
“This morning’s news is the worst. Delegate Ronnie Campbell has lost his fight with cancer. Virginia has lost good man and dedicated public servant, the House of Delegates has lost a sterling voice, and I have lost a good friend.
“Ronnie devoted his life to serving others. First as a State Trooper, then as a member of the Rockbridge County school board, then the Board of Supervisors, and finally the House of Delegates. In every instance, Ronnie made the people of his community his first concern.
“A detail from one of my last conversations with Ronnie speaks volumes about the kind of man he was. His biggest worry wasn’t the disease attacking his body, or any concern over what comes next.
“No, Ronnie was worried that he wouldn’t be able to make it Richmond to do his job, to be the voice for his constituents that they elected him to be. Just hours before his passing, he was working to see that the legislation he had prepared for the upcoming session wouldn’t fall by the wayside if for some reason he couldn’t be with us.
“Ronnie Campbell was a good and decent man, and we are less as a Commonwealth today for his passing. I would ask that all Virginians join me in holding Ronnie’s wife Ellen and his entire family in their prayers.”
Governor’s flag declaration:
In accordance with the authority vested in me as Governor, I hereby order that the flags of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Virginia be flown at half-staff on all state and local buildings and grounds in the Commonwealth of Virginia in memory and respect of Virginia House Delegate Ronnie Campbell.
I hereby order that the flags shall be lowered immediately on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, and remain at half-staff until sunset on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.
Ordered on this, the 13th day of December, 2022.
