Liz Cheney Endorses Kamala Harris

A slew of Republicans have announced their refusal to support Donald Trump’s attempt to recapture the White House. Many of them, however, refuse to support the one person who can stop him: Vice President Harris. Paul Ryan is one of many examples of this (The Hill [1]). Pat Toomey is the most recent (Newsweek [2]).

There are some who have crossed over [3] to support Harris. They got one more very big name tonight (WaPo [4]).

Liz Cheney, a former congresswoman from Wyoming, broke with the Republican Party on Wednesday to say she plans to vote for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris [5] in November.

“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this,” Cheney said at an event hosted by Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy in North Carolina. “And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”

I must confess that this is not a surprise to me. There were whispers that Cheney was trying to figure out the best timing for making her views known. Clearly, she went with now.

She also had choice words for the men cited above who lacked her courage:

Cheney, who weighed [6] a third-party presidential run earlier this election cycle, emphasized on Wednesday in the battleground state of North Carolina that she does not believe voters have the “luxury” of supporting write-in candidates to protest Trump.

“Because we are here in North Carolina, I think it is crucially important for people to recognize, not only is what I’ve just said about the danger that Trump poses, something that should prevent people from voting for him,” she said. “But I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states.”

Hear hear!
