Republican Party of Virginia Chair Congratulates John McGuire on 5th CD Win
Six days after the 5th Congressional Republican primary that had been in limbo due to an ending that was too close to call, excitement rippled throughout the District Monday afternoon as news emerged that the final results showed John McGuire 50.3% and Bob Good 49.7%. McGuire won with 375 votes.
Republican Party of Virginia (RPV) Chairman Rich Anderson released a statement congratulating McGuire and thanking Good for his service.
“The 5th Congressional District Republican Primary Election has now concluded, and I congratulate State Senator John McGuire on being the Republican nominee. Further, I thank Congressman Bob Good for his service to the Commonwealth and country.
“Given the margin, Congressman Good has the right—after the State Board of Elections certifies this result on July 2nd — to request a recount of the election. As Americans, we should respect his right to do so.
“As this process and the General Election move forward, we can all have confidence that the commonsense appointments to the Virginia Department of Elections and State Board of Elections over the last three years, along with Virginia’s exclusive use of paper ballots, will keep our elections secure.
“The major reforms put in place by Governor Youngkin will ensure that Virginia elections are safe, secure, and reliable—and they have included such safeguards as expanding data sharing agreements with other states, streamlining and speeding the process of removing deceased voters from the rolls, doubling the number of National Change of Address (NCOA) mailings each year to validate voter addresses, and banning the outside use of so-called ‘Zuckerbucks’ to influence electoral outcomes.
“To buttress our state efforts even further, the RNC and the Trump campaign are jointly making significant monetary and manpower investments this year in Election Integrity (EI) operations in Virginia. They have hired significant staff and are working to place 500 lawyers and 5,000 volunteers across our Commonwealth in strategic locations to safeguard our elections and ensure that the 2024 election is fairly and legally run.
“I and the Republican Party of Virginia are confident that our candidates and Commonwealth are on a sound glidepath to victory on November 5th.”
McGuire, who had declared victory on election night before watching continued counting leave results up in the air, released a statement Monday calling for unity of the District:
“I am looking forward to November and becoming part of the America First victory not only in Virginia but across the country. It’s time for us to come together as a party and focus on the bigger goal—winning in November. We need to unite and ensure a Republican victory to keep our conservative values strong. While I understand the desire to continue the fight, the outcome of this election will not change. The fight is over, and it’s time to move on and work together as a team.”
Meanwhile Good has sent out fundraising letters for a possible recount with the cost coming out of his pocket since the results are outside the automatic recount zone.
McGuire will face Democratic candidate Gloria Witt, an Albemarle County resident, who won with 57% of the vote in a three-way race. “Growing up on a small farm in Amherst, I learned the value of hard work and perseverance,” said said after her win. “From carrying water from the spring and working in the tobacco fields to earning a degree from Randolph College and building a successful career, every step of my journey has prepared me for this moment. I have always believed that we can achieve a more just and equitable society through dedication and collective action.”
The General Election is November 5.
