A “Notice of Grant Application for Afton Mountain Property” email was sent from the Augusta County Government Center late Monday afternoon:
As part of a grant application process, staff will present information on a grant application for master planning of the Afton Mountain property at the next regular Board of Supervisors meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 7pm in the boardroom at the Government Center in Verona.
Staff is applying for a Virginia Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) grant in partnership with the property owners. The CDBG grant would be for master planning services to establish a vision for the future redevelopment of the property.
Does that mean the late Phil Delaney’s dilapidated properties at the top of Afton Mountain are finally in the works for renewal in that integral area of Augusta and Nelson counties?
If so, Afton could once again become the jewel of the Blue Ridge as the entryway to the Shenandoah Valley and the renewed crossroads of Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail, Rt. 250, and I-64. For those with memories of the way it used to be, that would be a dream come true.
