Bolling: Let’s Talk About Book Bans

This one will probably get me in trouble, but here goes.

I’m intrigued by the argument that some school boards have “banned books” by deciding to remove them from public school libraries.

It doesn’t seem to me that any books have actually been “banned.” These school boards have simply decided that some books are not appropriate in a public school library. These books can still be found in many other places if you wish to read them.

While I may or may not agree with every decision these school boards have made as it relates to individual titles, I don’t really have a problem with them removing books that they feel violate community standards. In fact, one could argue that is their job. Someone has to make those decisions.

If you disagree with their decisions, challenge them, or the elected officials who appointed them, in the next election. That’s how democracy works.
