[Editor’s note: Looking back through the archives at previous veterans days, I thought it was worth remembering the vets who participated in the Staunton Veterans Day Parade in past years. Sadly, since these pics were taken, many of them are no longer with us.
I particularly miss Mr. Speedy Hite who participated in the parades and “support the troops” rallies into his 90s. He shared his stories when we would work GOP headquarters together, stories that I cherish. He served from World War II through Vietnam. He is remembered today along with all those who served including family and friends. Freedom is not free.

[25]Sadly missed was Mr. D.E. Hite (Speedy) of Augusta County who passed away in June at the age of 94 [26]. A veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, he was in every Veterans Day parade, often walking the route from start to finish. He was an American hero and his absence was a sad reminder that America’s Greatest Generation is slipping away.
