Day 10 of January 6 Committee Hearings: Final Public Hearing on Monday, Dec. 19, 2022

The final hearing of the Congressional Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol [1] will be held Monday, December 19, 2022, at 1:00 p.m.

That will be followed up with the Committee’s highly anticipated report on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

If Republicans were as truthful and transparent as they claim to be, they would allow the January 6 Committee to continue its work for the security of this country. However, the GOP has made it perfectly clear they intend to dissolve the Committee and try to sweep January 6 under the rug. Don’t let them do it.

Do not forget that dangerous day in American history that, try as they may, Republicans will not be able to sweep out of the history books. Their actions after the event are also recorded for posterity. My party’s behavior in all this has been astounding, to say the least, even coming after Donald Trump’s presidency when norms were broken and tossed aside at an alarming rate with, sadly, the often-tacit approval of most in GOP leadership.

The Select Committee was established because of concerns regarding domestic terrorism after thousands of Donald Trump supporters swarmed and attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 (Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol | About [2]).

During that violent riot, domestic terrorists aka Trump supporters who backed his claim of a “stolen election” attacked the Capitol and Metropolitan police officers and vandalized the historic seat of U.S. Government while shouting life-threatening chants against members of Congress. In the almost two years since, there have been hundreds of arrests and convictions as investigators continue to bring those insurrectionists to justice.

One of the most important finds of the January 6 investigation was that the insurrection’s planning and execution went to the highest levels in the Republican Party’s involvement in our government [3]. A total of 147 Republicans voted the evening of January 6 to invalidate the electoral college vote – 139 House of Representative members and eight Senate members – after the violent riot earlier that day (including Virginia’s Congressmen [4]).

The bottom line: We are all Americans who are opponents in politics, not enemies. Those who violently attacked police officers and the Capitol building should have been roundly condemned by the Republican Party, in my opinion, and in the age before Trump I believe that would have happened. The ends does not justify the means when our democracy is at risk … but try telling that to those who capitulated for a piece of the power pie. Time will show that the January 6 Select Committee and its members are on the right side of history.
