Trump Bullies America with Threat to Terminate Constitution

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” –Oath of the President of the United States

“Tonight, I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible. There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.” -Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), Vice Chair of the January 6 Committee

If you’re closely following politics like the rest of us, you heard about Donald Trump’s Saturday night tweet calling to suspend the U.S. Constitution.

To repeat … Donald Trump called for the U.S. Constitution to be terminated.

Terminated.

These kindergarten-sounding rants are tiring. My question: Where are all the Constitutional Conservatives who thumped their chests and made the rounds of Republican circles a decade ago, joining GOP committees and purging hard-working longtime volunteers while extoling their “Constitutional Conservative” defense of the document our laws are based on?

As has become status quo in today’s GOP, only a few have spoken out. One of those in Virginia is former Lt. Governor Bill Bolling:

“The fact that former President Trump would even suggest that basic Constitutional protections should be ‘terminated’ because he disagreed with the outcome of the 2020 election proves beyond any doubt that he should never be let anywhere near the presidency again. … Anyone who would even think about supporting this man for President in 2024 would do a huge disservice to the Republican Party, and more importantly, to the nation.”

Rep. Liz Cheney, who is in her last days representing Wyoming in D.C. after standing up for the Constitution at the expense of her Congressional seat and House leadership, has consistently called out Trump and the danger he presents not only to the GOP but to the country. Last weekend she tweeted:

“Donald Trump believes we should terminate ‘all rules, regulations and articles, even those found in the Constitution’ to overturn the 2020 election. That was his view on 1/6 and remains his view today. No honest person can now deny that Trump is an enemy of the Constitution.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), the other Republican on the January 6 Committee with Rep. Cheney, also reacted to Trump’s outrageous comment:

“With the former President calling to throw aside the constitution, not a single conservative can legitimately support him, and not a single supporter can be called a conservative. This is insane. Trump hates the constitution.”

Former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, who worked on Republican political campaigns including President George W. Bush, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Arizona Senator John McCain but left the party over Trump’s chaotic and dangerous leadership, expressed extreme alarm at Trump’s latest bashing of American democracy. On Sunday he wrote at his website, The Warning:

This should be treated like a national emergency. This man is a former president of the United States. He incited a violent insurrection, a cold civil war, and now he has revealed himself fully. This is not a joke. This should have led the news on every broadcast across America last night. This actually qualifies as real “breaking news.” Every single elected official from town clerk to US senator who has taken an oath has a patriotic, moral and constitutional obligation to rebuke and repudiate this. What do you think?

Schmidt followed up Monday: It’s time to end the Trump era: 2015-2022:

This is an important moment in America as we careen into the eighth year of the Trump era. It is a moment that demands the repudiation at long last of Donald Trump by the Republican Party, and specifically the elected officials who have run under its banner.

The importance of paying attention to the Trump rant was not lost on Ruth Marcus, deputy editorial page editor at the Washington Post, who had originally believed in 2015 that Republicans would not vote for or even nominate Trump. Republicans and the party proved her wrong and, as she noted, paying attention now is important for our democracy (Opinion | Ruth Marcus: Donald Trump’s latest outrage is too dangerous to ignore):

The former and would-be future president has suggested suspending the Constitution in support of his deranged belief that he won the election and that its results are subject to change. A man who took an oath to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution now has hijacked “our great Founders” in the service of his megalomania. …

This is insurrectionism by social media. Nothing — and certainly not imaginary “Fraud,” capitalized or not — “allows for the termination” of constitutional guarantees. Trump is laying the groundwork for a coup.

I’m past expecting Republican leaders to speak out.

After seven years, it’s easy to become numb to Trump’s constant grab for the spotlight, his incessant need to take control of the microphone, and his increasingly outrageous bully-rants. Don’t become numb. It is imperative that we all pay attention and stay vigilant.

After all, we would never have accepted this from anyone else. So why Trump? He is not going away. His unhinged behavior will continue because this is who he is; it is who he has always been.  The GOP needs to push away in numbers larger than the handful who have done so. Kudos to them for standing up to the extreme.

To terminate the constitution is to terminate America. It is yet another crossroads for Republicans. Trump? Or America?
