With their win in Nevada, Democrats will retain control of the U.S. Senate. They will hold at least 50 seats, and potentially 51 seats if they win the special election in Georgia on December 6.
Republicans have no one but themselves to blame for this disastrous outcome. They nominated some truly horrible candidates in key swing states, and the continued influence of Donald Trump in the Republican Party helped motivate the Democratic base and drive away more moderate voters.
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade was also a significant factor in giving Democrats an unexpected victory in a midterm election that is not normally favorable to the presidential party in power.
The outcome in the House of Representatives is still in doubt. Republicans are closing in on a narrow majority, but vote counting continues in many states that are still too close to call.
