View From the Editor’s Desk: Jay Hughes

Word began circulating late Saturday afternoon that Jay Hughes had passed away. Jay was part of the early wave of Virginia bloggers 20 years ago so his name is known throughout the Commonwealth. He had moved to Florida probably about 6-7 years ago but I found out yesterday that he had moved back to Virginia.

Jay and I were in the same circle of bloggers and crossed paths at GOP events and celebrations. However, what stands out to me was a collaboration with him in 2016 when Virginia had the possibility of an historic snowfall over the entire state.

The Weather Channel called the storm Jonas but I preferred to call it Winter Storm Lori because it was on my youngest sister’s birthday.

From my corner of the Shenandoah Valley, I live-blogged the snowfall [1] and folks from all over sent snow pics from their own corners of the Commonwealth, including Jay.

Except Jay didn’t send pics. He sent videos that he dubbed Snow-Ragnarock [2]. As the man in the street, he roamed outdoors in the snow checking on the storm in Alexandria with live video and commentary – I think four videos in all that covered through the day and into the night. It was a fun project to work on together.

The only details I’ve heard are that Jay’s funeral will be this coming Saturday, October 29, at 10:00am, at J.T. Morris Funeral Home in Hopewell.

Thanks for the memories, Jay.
